You were already lucky for the fact that even with a destroyed cat you didn't get any errors from the computer (usually errors appear because the oxygen and temperature sensors don't get correct readings any more, and the engine start running in safe mode.
When the cat falls apart it's also quite dangerous, 'cause some small particles may land inside the cylinders and literally demolish them. Finally, you are not allowed to do that. If your exhaust/cat is broken you should simply replace it. Otherwise your car won't be street legal any more due to gas emissions regulations.

Did this happen after you changed the engine mounts? Now you know why the factory engine mounts are so flexible and you laughed at them. Remember? You may need to get some heat proof rubber gaskets to go between your pipe and mufflers? To give it a bit of flexibility so this doesn't happen all the time because it will. When the engine moves from torque the exhaust doesn't and twists and weakens then breaks the seams and welds.

Used to know a guy who was the service manager at a Porsche dealership. He had really funny stories about Porsche -reliability- and difficulties in making the very frequent repairs.
The reactions of his customers when he told them what their cars needed and what it would cost were priceless. He drove a Toyota and his wife drove a Mazda. -German (auto) engineering- is a joke.

whats the sence of cutting up the exhaust to empty broken contents of the cats, looks shyte and a total waste of money, for the sake of a grand you can buy Topgear Valvetronic Exhaust, 200 cell cccats and the manifolds and fit that! i know the 996 is cheap as chips as long as the engine is good etc but do your self a favour and change to stainless steel!

Fairly common that 1 of the catalytic converter brakes down on this cars, im agree With Dariune, throw the Stock mufflers in the bin, they are just crap anyway, and spend the money on high end aftermarket exhaust like Fabspeed, makes a huge difference. expensive but much better built

I've got to say I'm lucky I had a 997 and not a 996. In the 8 years I had it, I had nothing like the problems you've shown us in this series. If all I had seen were these videos (and keep them coming) I'd never buy a Porsche, but I'm on #3 now and enjoying every day of it.

I can't believe you can just weld that and to a Porche nonetheless. On my side of the savage world, they told me to buy a new muffler in case I can't find a used one, they couldn't be bothered with welding none of that, and my car was a Citroen freakin Xsara.

Love the use of an angle grinder in the street lol. Please say it was a Sunday morning too- I know a lot of people say renew to system, but they perhaps may not have seen the prices of 911 systems-

There's nothing funny when you have spent your hard earned cash, on a second hand 911, that is costing you a fortune to own and run.
Trying to save money, by welding worn out parts, never advisable.
