Volvo XC40 vs XC60 review - which is the better buy? - Head-to-Head

It's Volvo vs Volvo in our latest head-to-head. The XC40 may be the smallest and coolest Volvo SUV you can buy, but how does the interior, practicality and (most importantly) the cost compare to its bigger brother, the XC60? Watch my latest head-to-head review to find out!

XC60 T6 hands down the better buy! I bought mine (2020) in July. I had not intended too but the dealer was near the Jeep Dealer and I could not find the Grand Cherokee I wanted. I drove the XC60 T6 and BAM! That supercharger is awesome! I am also 6'1- and the XC40 is too small. Plus they do not offer the T6!
I would have bought a XC90 but I could not get one without 7 seats. I am single, retired so kids aren't passengers. I wanted the extra room for my bicycle and other cargo but no luck. Volvo would not sell one with 5 seats only.
My one complaint is the GPS mapping system. It is absolutely rotten. I have to use my phone and google maps as Volvo Map gets you lost! And it does not accurately spot and update your location.

Hi, I'm testing a XC40 (T4) a few days and I find the engine noise more like one from a diesel car. I am considering getting the T5 but I am concerned that the noise will just be 'louder' in the same diesel-like type of sound. I know XC40 is not a sports car and I shouldn't expect that sort of experience. But I thought that a 190hp petrol car of that money would either be very quiet or sound a bit sporty. Am I alone on this thought? Anyone with a T5 that can comment on the engine noise? Thanks

Too expensive Chinese rip off of a Swedish brand. matt stop deceiving the public. these aren't even made in Sweden. they just bought the volvo badge. go and buy a hyundai with a 5year warranty not 3 as volvo are so confident on reliability they offer 3 on a car way more expensive. or an mg as they are Chinese and way cheaper with 7 year warranty. stop the badge snobbery and buy a car on merit not the badge. These are not volvos period.

XC60 all day. Better looking car all round. And you can get a used one for a very good price if you shop around. I would go for either a D5 or T5 while you still can, as Volvo don't make 5cyl engines anymore, which is tragic.
The XC40 looks like another Chinese influenced econobox to me, just like the offerings from MG.
But based on looks alone, the V90 is the best looking, and probably the best equipped current Volvo, imo.

I agree with all your review. I ended up buying the XC60 because of space and overall a better value, one thing I need to add, the XC60 you compared to the XC40 is absolute -Fugly- My XC60 has the R-type package and looks a lot like the XC40 you showed, and looks amazingly cool. one thing I noticed as well is that with the longer wheelbase mine has noticeable less roll. but either SUV would make a great choice.

Kinda sad that you guys compare a momentum model to an inscription model. ofc the XC40 will look and feel more high quality with more technology then the basic XC60.
Put both models with the same options and there you have a true head-to-head.
Now we only go with equal price which really cant be trusted due to we are comparing to different models in size.

Good day I'm a totally manual transmission driver and don't mind high performance desils I'm totally sold on both the v60 and xc60 but I don't like how they are limited to 190bph for manuals when auto's go all the way up to 367 please assist me if possible in buying preferably the v60 at 300 plus bhp with manual transmission cheers

After 28 blissful Saab years, I reluctantly moved across to Volvo. I'm a convert and bought a second hand V40 with lots of bells and whistles. Totally love it. Looking forward to upgrading to a hybrid XC40 at some point. Volvo are making the cars that Saab would have produced if they'd not been murdered by General Motors

the ugliest Volvo ever made! Designers in love with triangles and decoratife details with ton's of american gimmicks. The designers of today were watching Star Wars yesterday. and you can see that. Fortunately they have no influence on the shape of a nice (naked) girl, otherwise I might lose my interest even here.

The load capacity is no match for my car, with the seats up do I have 998 liters and if I fold them does it increase to well over 2000 liters.
And I payed a minimal fraction of what you have to pay for one of these.
And yes, my car is a volvo too
