Skoda Octavia vRS review - better than a Golf GTI?

Gotta love the carwow launch tests. almost always on wet road. very British. :D
(Skoda) launch control is garbage for front wheel drive. There's way too much torque at the wheels when the clutch is engaging (and the automatic clutch operation doesn't seem to be optimized either. You have to counter act and adjust the accelerator on the go. Well, since you can't put down that torque anyway what's the point in having the engine reving at 3000rpm? I find that my O3 RS230 Estate from 2018 is quicker from standstill in sport mode without that -launch control-. You have to use the left foot for the brake as with launch control outherwise you won't be avble to operate the accellerator with the -proper sensitivity-. You have to push it about 50% for a fraction of a second until the car starts moving and then apply more. I don't have such professional timing gear but the video my passenger made said 6. 5s for 0-100kmph (we stopped when the speedo shows 105 which is about real 100 - or 62mph for all the royal people. That was a perfect launch with max acceleration at the grip limit of the tires without loosing grip once. Also, road was perferct, newly made and completely dry. But it takes some tries and some experience with the car to get it right.
BTW,
like in all VW the traction control is garbage too. If the VW traction control engages it usuall throttles the enbgine completely for a moment. Even wors that the acceleration come back very abruptly, often leading to yet another loss of grip and the traction control shutting down the engine again. It feels like driving one of the early traction control systems from the 90s. It's nowhere near as sensitive and -intelligent- as the traction control BMW has for ages. There it only happen in extreme situations that the aceleration is gone completely. Usually you never notice the traction control (except for the blinking light) - it just seem to be able to control the throttle so that the engine puts out as much power as the tires can handle - no more and no less.

Hi mat. i am from india. i fallow all ur videos. and also ur friend YANI. u guys are funny and love ur shows. and the thing is, i own a 1. 8 tsi skoda superb 2014. in this review u say something about the mileage or fuel consumption on a 1. 4 electric. 250 miles per gallon. that is 55 kmpl on a indian way(electric motor inc). but to be frank, i got 21 kmpl on my superb on a highway driving at a cruise speed of 80 to100 kmph. what do you say about that. i am no arguing. just a reality they want to say. if u drive it really well it might give such a millage. and i worked for VW group. and i know they are really good in miles/ per. as compared to GM's or some of them. which are really GAS guzzlers.

Loved my MK2 VRS. Went for the MK3 245 and it brought alot of toys but is not very engaging, also I have alot of rattles on the interior unfortunately. And the paint quality isn't as good as Audi as it chips easily.
Not sure I can get excited for the MK4. Great engines and I like the looks, I just don't think the build quality is there and main dealers are getting harder to work with.
I'm also over driving in the UK on rubberband tyres.

Dont like that they have Skoda plastered across the back of the new cars and the wheels are awful to be honest - i have a 2016 vrs (manual diesel) was told there is no manual option anymore? Fake exhaust tips, does the new one have twin exhaust(like each side)And i really hope they haven't gotten rid of the red and green colour to the vrs badge?

I seriously don't see what the point is of this boring piece of crap car? all VAG stuff is the biggest load of overrated crap we have today, particularly the VW Golf and the extremely boring Octavia, this is 1 car that does not need to be produced in RHD, lets hope this version is the very last: )

One point I have to disagree with is the stop start button, on the steering column makes perfect sense, that's where the keys go on older cars, why change it doesn't make sense to have it on the dash, or centre column for me perfect spot for the start button.

In this review I personaly think you are a little bias! Skoda is not a super fun car to drive like the Honda Civic Type R, but it is more practical and the cabine is nicer! If you whant a practical car that can go fast from time to time this is the car for you!

They should-ve named it the cassowary because at a distance it looks quiet and genteel but when you-re in it or beside it it-s only then you realise it-s a demon, by the way Skoda that-s meant as a genuine compliment. PS, nice work Skoda I-m very impressed. -

You are really condescending when it comes to the Skoda where you wouldn't be with other makes. Stability control, when was the last time I turned that off? Thats right NEVER. Lazy journalism. My race blue vRS estate should arrive any day now.

Is there anyone who doesnt like gear levers out there? I bloomin love them. Why are they removing them. Its one of the crucial touch points in the car. Ive had some cars with brilliant gear levers in the past. Did jag start this? Why?
