What s the performance difference between the new Toyota GR86, the GT86, and the classic AE86? Well, we ve got all three lining up here, so we re going to put them to the test over the quarter-mile! So let s see how the cars compare. Starting with the GR86, it s powered by a 2. 5-litre 4-cylinder boxer engine that can produce 234hp and 250Nm of torque. It drives the rear wheels only, comes with a manual transition, and weighs in at 1, 275kg. Next up it s the GT86. Under the bonnet, you ll find a 2-litre 4-cylinder boxer engine with a power output of 200hp and 205Nm. It s also equipped with rear-wheel drive and manual transmission, and it comes in slightly lighter than the GR86, tipping the scales at 1239kg. Lastly, it s the classic AE86. Powered by a 1. 6-litre 4-cylinder engine, the power output is well down on the two other competitors, at 124hp and 145Nm. Just like the others, it s rear-wheel drive with a manual transmission, but it s a whole lot lighter than the others, coming in at just 970kg!

I might be wrong guys but looking at the water trail/spray behind cars, GT86 had most water so I strongly believe that Matt was in the lucky spot on the driest patch whereas GT86 was bogging down to excessive water. Matt, do another video between GR86 & GT86 on dry weather & I am pretty sure the results will be different supporting my observation. What do u guys think?

Yet another episode where Ben clearly sucks at launching but people are still gonna cream themselves over him being a rAcE dRiVer and blame the car (nevermind he's done this in every car he drove on this show) lol. Imagine getting out-launched by an ae86.

Would anyone else also choose hands down the AE86 over both the other cars. I think it held its own pretty well against the much more modern stuff! Love it.
Edit: (I'd probably upgrade the brakes though)

From a fellow GT86 owner, you need 6000rpm to properly launch the car from that 2L because of the peak torque from the curve. Below that is the famous torque dip which you get nothing if you start off from there.
reply

longer gears, less power, less torque (with a huge torque dip right where you need it most. I had a 1st gen brz and it was brutally slow, even by minivan standards lol. I think that new GR86 would be a lot more fun

This is just another video which proves what I thought a few times before. Ben can't launch cars at all. Even automatic ones he fails to launch properly due to his somewhat slow reaction times.
reply

bens done loads of these now and he still doesn t understand when to launch. he keeps doing it when the hands are fully down, when you re meant to do it as soon as the hands are moving down

Former stig needs to be introduced as The British Chandler (from Friends.
Also, that GR sounds horrible. I hate fake internal sounds pumped through the speakers.

The AE86 is still the best looking car there. That profile and the way it slopes back. Oh and don't forget it has pop-up headlights, so. that's automatically ten times cooler.

Alright, I was planning on buying a GT86 and this video changed my mind. That s just unacceptable that the AE86 is beating it for half the race. I m buying a miata instead

The GR86 is slightly underrated from the factory. There are drag videos of the GR86 keeping up with a Subaru WRX. The GR86 is a proper car now. Get on while you can.

Nearly a 14-minute Video, with 5 minutes of Watson Guffing Off about nothing, Shut your mouth and race the Damn cars, or do you like the sound of your own voice?

That new 86 is a sick little motor! Huge improvement over the one before which i found pretty disappointing. Would still take the trueno ALL DAY every day
