Here s an off-road battle you weren t expecting to see today! We ve got our hands on a Land Rover Discovery, and it s going up against a Volkswagen Touareg! Both of these cars have been modded, although the types of mods they ve had are vastly different. So let s see what s changed Starting with the Discovery, it s powered by a 3-litre turbo V6 diesel engine which has been tuned slightly, and as a result, it produces 306hp and 600Nm of torque. It comes packed with a load of off-road tech, including low-range driving modes and central locking diffs. However, it s had a whole load of extras added, from a tent box to the roof coupled with a fridge in the boot! As a result this tips the scales at an amazing 3, 400kg! Next up it s the Touareg. It s packing a tuned 5-litre V10 diesel under the bonnet which produces an almighty 352hp and 1000Nm! It s also had a number of mods from a 50mm height lift through to the addition of huge off-road tyres, and it s a whole lot lighter than the Disco, coming in at 2, 500kg. seeratlas: No offense, but out here in the American west, we judge the capability and worth of a 4x4:
1. by how well it can navigate terrain a human can't negotiate on hands and knees; ,
2. how long it can keep running and avoiding damage while doing so,
3. how good the stereo and AC work: )
and,
4. (at least in the more urban areas) how fast and comfortably it can run down the Interstates: )
Reminds me of the time when Mercedes had just purchased Jeep, and wanted to put out an ad campaign showing how their Suv outperformed the Wagoneer off road.
The campaign had to be scrapped when the Jeep just trounced all over the Merc at a fraction of the cost.
Last comment, surely GB has more challenging terrain than your test area(I've run some of it on a motorcycle. why then didn't you take the two vehicles out there to test?
BTW, I own several Range Rovers, a number of Wagoneers, and few older Mitsubishi Monteros. Have stayed away from the German vehicles due to the incredibly expensive parts/service costs.

The Touareg had me at the exhausts. A puff of smoke thrown straight out of both sides is just one of the coolest things you can see on an offroader.
Fair play to the Disco on winning though. Never bet against an LR offroad.
Both great cars to watch and another interesting match up.
Can we please get rid of the silly hill descent control bit though? If you're testing what the car can do it should be fine to use HDC or the brakes. Its not like the brakes don't work if you don't have HDC in the first place and a lot of the time just the ABS can do at least as good a job.
It would be nice to see a bit longer drag race aswell if there's anywhere around there with the space.

Slightly amusing anecdote: For the short period in which the V10 TDI Touareg was sold in the United States, we sold a handful. One day, I saw a blacked out and lowered V10 Touareg in the service department. Apparently it was owned by Hendrick Motorsports (the NASCAR fellas) and was heavily modified/tuned. I didn't get any info on it or see it perform. but a bunch of crazy NASCAR engineers fiddling with a big V10 turbo-diesel was amusing.

Wide tires are not what you want for off-road. When you air down you are lengthening the tires, not widening them. Taller tires with good strong side walls are best for off-road. As Graham briefly mentioned, the wider tires actually caused less grip, because there was less pressure per square inch of tire to the ground (Not talking air pressure.
If they put a 34x11 on that Touareg it would have done a much better job.

Please stop so much of the click in the pop up banner, follow the link in the description below.
If you want people to watch the video, don't tempt them with tempt them with going on to more, as it's pointless Clicking on a 15 minute video then 30 seconds in going somewhere else.
Sorry for moaning guys but this is getting to be a bit much now.

I think Graham was incorrect in his assessment of the first race and also wide tires means more traction at the same tire pressure, I know he s probably basing off the argument that narrow tires will increase ground pressure and thus cut through a top layer of slick mud/snow but I don t think that applies here

I live off road and run two V10 Touareg. Once one gets used to instant Torque having to rev up an engine seems so undesirable. Twilight of the internal combustion gods. as we are upon the cusp of 500 Bhp per wheel Electric Vehicles and retro fit conversion of internal combustion to EV.

I don't know what's the point of 11: 30 challenge, where first car goes slowly, and then Mat goes quickly in the parts where the previous car slipped so he doesn't slip and just rushes through the section, how can you compare these two? What's the point of that?

I used to sell VWs back in those days and the Touareg definitely has hill decent control and you should have been able to set the speed between 2-5mph. I'm afraid to say how to get into that mode as it's been many years since I've sold or owned a Touareg.

Awesome episode. I feel like the recording of the exhaust didn t do it justice, if you tune and delete a diesel v10 it should sound better than I heard and from Matt s reaction in the car there seemed to be something he heard that we didn t.

Why do you talk like your the best driver in the world when your not even close to it. i really. don't like the was you speak about yourself. very swollen headed. typical English man claiming someone else's discovery as your own

That course going over the rocks was exactly like the road i had to drive to get up to a villa in Andalucia. And i had rented a VW Caddy. Needless to say we only left twice in the week. Taxis refused to pick us up.

Funny how the discovery, having i higher ground clearance was closer to the ground than the Tuareg. Tbh, thought the rock gards makes it a few cm lover. Also interesting it weighs almost as much as my 4x4 Tractor.

If maintained properly the v10 tdi will serve you well.
Will you please also put FT LBS as most understand it, every damn video like this.
Tell farmer Giles to get a haircut.

Don't those V10s come with carbon ceramic brakes, or was that only the Audi version? The tiniest bit of gravel will destroy those 20, 000+ brakes versus the steel version.
