Toyota v Ford v VW: ULTIMATE pick-up test!

It s time for the ultimate pick-up truck group test! We've got our hands on the Ford Ranger Raptor, the VW Amarok and the Toyota Hilux GR Sport, and they re going head-to-head over a series of challenges to find out which is the best! Not only will we be testing their off-road capabilities - but we ll also be reviewing their designs, interiors, what they re like to drive, as well as launching them all from 0-60mph! The question is, which will come out on top? You ll need to stick with Mat and see for yourself!

Great video, great values, totally irrelevant.
These vehicles are, put simply, what is wrong with our world. They have enormous capabilities and can be great fun, but the fact is that they really are impossibly terrible for the planet, only a very few people are actually capable of driving them to anywhere near their limits, the occasions in which they might be taken to their limits are incredibly seldom and the actual percentage of people who even take them off road for a mild bimble is disappearingly small. And they really are truly appalling for the environment, not only in their manufacturing (quite honestly, I suspect that they're even worse than the supposedly terrible EVs in this, but also that they are appalling in their waist of resources while in us.
I know of about 6 or 7 of these terrible vehicles in my vicinity, and not one is used for anything other than pretending to be some sort of macho man.
If I had my way, I'd require a special licence just to be able to buy them, in much the same way that HGVs and m/bikes need specific licences.

On the road it s not so much that the Raptor has coil springs but that they are rated to carry only 650kgs approx, rather than the commercial spec 1060kgs approx of the much stiffer others. The American specification leaf sprung Rangers and probably Amarok, if they decide to sell it there, will have 500 to 650kg rated springs, much softer than Australian and European models.
What you tend to ignore is the fuel consumption of the Raptor, which you may find to be around 15mpg compared to the other two doing double the mpg or even better with still more than adequate road performance. They also tow 3. 5 tons while the Raptor does not. The others are the sensible choice, especially for business user while the Raptor is the rich man s toy. The difference between men and boys is actually the size of their toys.

The Hilux will make it to 450, 000km on the odometer with regular servicing, and the Ford and VW will probably not make it to 100, 000km or maybe 200, 000km without a series of catastrophic check engine lights and limp modes that are impossible to diagnose. Both the VW and the Ford will depreciate and be sold for scrap well before the Hilux. 450, 000km on a Hilux in Australia, means its just broken in.
Landcruiser with a 6 or 8 cylinder should have been the comparison, but those are just legendary in Australia or wherever theres a desert or a ragtag army truck with a soviet 50 cal on the back Technical. Why they call a pickup truck with a heavy machine gun a Technical is a false term as its no technological wonder, but rather a platform for a weapon.

You can do whatever test you want. and is obviously entretaining. But you won't convince me. the past of time and the truth is that wherever you go around the world and whatever the emergency is there will be a Hilux. Yes probably less confortable, less luxurious, les modern but undoubtly a million times more reliable!

The Raptor is for bros to hang out at the petrol station and talk about taking them on an off-road course someday.
The Amarok is for getting the children to school.
The Hilux is the one that will be trusted to do some actual work. They're an institution for a reason.

Great test but why pick a none commercial pick up. Most pick ups won t go to the general public. Or at least try them with a load in. To consider the ford is 20% more and it s not 20% better. Ford do a commercial one that s aimed at fun that should of been tested

How come the UK spec Ford Ranger Raptor only has 292hp? That is oddly little from a 3. 0V6 twin turbo. Our South East Asia Ford Ranger Raptor has the same engine, but it puts out 397hp. Anyone can explain this? Or is it the UK variant has restricted power output.
reply

Two flavors of Ford Ranger vs a Toyota Hilux sportified. _i would prefer a petrol powered pickup over a Diesel powered one_ Sure as long as you don't have to pay for fuel or need the range on one tank, you would take a V6 Turbo over a Diesel.

That Toyota will still be in service in 20 years and have some value. See if the VW or Ranger lasts 10 years of abuse. I'd drive the Raptor though. The price of maintenance will kill them off.
reply

That Toyota is really milking and failing with that GR badging. It's all show and very little go considering the high price.
If I was after a 4x4 pickup, I'd import from the states.

Great video mate. Can you do a Toyota Cruiser 79 Series vs Jeep Wrangler or Gladiator please? All of my friends are cruiser boys but I need a video to show them what s better
reply

My eyes are drooling for the Raptor, its performance and features are top notch but I have this anxiety calling for reliability. I know hilux is immortal but toyota in design. YOU SUCK!
reply

The only problem with Toyota is that shit-never-breaks. Their Guarantee/Warranty is useless because I actually never have to use it apart from free service. So, Toyota all-day!
reply

You should see the Australian Toyota Hilux GR-S Dakar inspired looks nothing like the pre facelifted ROUGE which is what you really have in UK on video, that's a bit old tbh
reply

Yea the coilover in the Ford are nice but 650 kg payload is a joke for me that no Pik up compare it to an Ineos or nissan patrol thats the cars you should compare it with
reply

I think the toyota is suffering from hubras. It was so far ahead of the game that it seemed to have rested on its laurels and now is one of the woi think they need a rethink
reply

i would still pick the hilux over the rest of the competitor. for the OBVIOUS reason.
that hilux engine, transmission and drivetrain would outlast them all

reply

If you gave me a Ford or Amarok i would sell it and buy a Toyota.
Reliability is more important than touchscreens and mud and ruts settings or coil springs

I can t get my head around who is paying 60k for a pickup utility vehicle. Back in 2004 I bought a Nissan Navara double cab Sport for 14k brand new on the road.
