When it comes to choosing a new posh, mid-range saloon, it doesn’t get any better than these three - the New BMW 5 Series, the Mercedes E-Class, and the Audi A6. The question is if you want to get your hands on one, which should you choose Well, Mat’s on hand to put all three cars through a series of rigorous tests to find out which one comes out on top! So let’s take a closer look at the three. First up we have the New BMW 5 Series. It’s unmistakably a BMW from the exterior, although we’re still not sure about the load of straight edges and creases across the front and rear. Thankfully it’s not followed the route of the 3 Series and added the huge kidney grille design! Step inside and the cabin is full of soft-touch materials along with a huge infotainment and digital dial screen. When it comes to performance, the car we have is the 520i. It comes with a 2-litre turbo petrol engine that sends power to the rear wheels only, and it puts down 208hp. It comes with a price tag of around 64, 000. Then we have the E-Class. It’s probably the most stylish, luxurious-looking car from the outside. There are even some trim options available to make it look like the S-Class! The interior is also easily the most luxurious of the three cars. There are soft-touch materials everywhere, and even the opportunity to have three screens in the front! The seats are also super comfortable. The car we have here is the E300e, which comes with a 2-litre turbocharged petrol engine, and it’s also a plug-in hybrid, so it comes with a small electric motor too. It can put down 313hp and this edition costs 77, 000. Then we have the A6. It had a small facelift last year, but it’s still been around for absolutely ages! It still looks pretty smart on the outside, although we would rather choose one of the other two instead. The interior is nice, with soft-touch materials throughout, but it’s easily the most basic of the three cars here. Then again, given the age it’s also the cheapest, so it’s not too bad a deal. The car we have here also comes equipped with a 2-litre turbocharged engine along with an electric motor, so it can put down 299hp. It’s also the only car here that comes with all-wheel drive! The specific model we have is the 50 TSIe Quattro in S-line trim, and it costs around 66, 000.

The huge screen in the BMW appears like a big tablet that someone forgot in the car. BMW lacks of aesthetic sense, and they are not able yet to properly fit their huge screens, other brands are much bettter. When I get into a car, I want to see a car, not a mix between an office and a car. Thumb down for BMW for that screen, and ugly front. Unfortunately Mercedes is not better. Audi gives the idea of a car. I don't like the voice control, I don't use it, and I'll never do. I'm not sure about the program they use, but if Wank is in Germany, you have to pronounce with V, not U, it's Vank, not Uank or Uenk, and it's [Ber]lin (like berry. You pronounced those German words in English. In fact, when you said Berlin in English, on the screen, all the names started with Bir, and not Ber.

Most impressive thing about all these cars is the weight. Like holy shit theyre so heavy. The newer the generation, the cheaper built yet also somehow heavier they are. BMW have failed catastrophically with both performance and looks. But Mercedes have failed in looks, weight and quality. Just give me a 2016 M550d and throw these in a volcano. Seeing how backwards were going with newer generation vehicles im in no hurry changing out my 17 330e.

In my opinion every car is getting similar and the car manufactures lose their peculiarities. They should make the cars for the fans and not for the highest market. The disappearence of the knobs is annoying because touchscreens are more difficult to operate than buttons. The grill of the BMW is just to high, the audi looks boring and the mercedes has to much screens and the taillight are wworse than its predecessor.

BMW stuffing up their cars lately, look cheap plastic from outside (Yes, I know the interior quality is the best, but does not help if looks like you a driving around in a black plastic bin-liner - HATE ALL BLACK TRIM. And what a let-down on the steering, BMW betraying what makes them great Sigh

The front of the BMW doesnt match the rear. Looks like a 5 and a 3 glued together. The audi has stood the test of time. If it aint broke dont fix That eclass though! It just looks unhappy. Like put your lips together and puff out your cheeks amd you will look like the eclass too.

I dont think that Mat anymore as the comparison results at best at heart and I think that he has become a bimmer boy and we would like Mat to make another video where he says that Mercedes E-class is the winner, Because lets be honest she is the grand winner in this comparison

I would disqualify the 5er solely based on exterior looks. than i would discard the Merc based on those hideous headlights. If I could have the Audi exterior with the Mercedes interior design and the BMW drivetrain and interior tech, I would take it any day

Even between all these, I'd rather have the A6 C7. 5, it looks much better both inside and out. C8 interior does not look as good, I don't like the design of a massive screen, especially not more of them. Such a shame what's happening to cars, it's all downhill.

The new design of the bmw 5 is catarophic.
The E60 looks extremely beautiful against that ugly UFO.
Mercedes and Audi do not have a V6 3. 0L anymore. Is this the end of petrol automobile
Hopefully BMW still offers the almighty B58C 3. 0L L6.

how the hell is possible that we want all cars to be super efficient and them manifacturers put out tanks that weight as much the moon it is a joke to us and the evoirement. buy japanese hatchbacks, they are lght, fiun and economical. 2 TONNES! WTH!
reply

Am i wrong or is this pretty much a base bmw against some middle spec competitors (yes bmw fanboy)
Also it seems BMW looses a bit of its bmwness in its standart models. Average steering mostly, here, the i4 and 1series. can you confirm that

reply

For those of you comparing that they should have tested the 530e, well that car is seven grand MORE than the Merc here, and eighteen grand more than the Audi.
Up against price-equivalent Mercs and Audis, the 530e would get destroyed.

Matt, did BMW pay you to have it win! Worst performer, ugly looks, expensive and cumbersome info unit. MB and Audi, IMO are far nicer and better looking. The Audi wins easy. Quattro, best performance, lowest cost, overall best handling.
reply

The BMW front end looks awful and the interior looks soulless! It looks like an electric vehicle and that's not a good thing! The Mercedes looks the best inside and out and the Audi looks like well. an Audi!

What if you don’t want to buy a german midsize sedan there is the Lexus es and Jaguar XF and Volvo s90 and DS 9 and if you’re in America there’s the Cadillac ct5 and Genesis g80 to choose from as well
reply

i really do hate the path Mercedes is going, I absolutely hate the way their new gen cars look. and what's that dash cameara all about I really feel like my whole privacy violated. L Mercedes
reply

The main thing that we can get from this is that at these prices, german companies are happy to rip us off. Those figures are utterly ridiculous for cars of those specs. Absolutely horrid.
reply

I like the Audi however I just don’t understand why car makers can’t just give us a fully loaded car. Just bung everything in. Who buys a car nowadays for the standard price No one!
reply

Automatic tail-gating, what a great idea. Perhaps some tech wizard could re-programme it to drive closer and turn the headlights on after 20 seconds. Asking for a friend
reply

5 series was down on almost everything between the three of them, yet it won.
Wow BMW fan-boys really have that. Mat didn't take the risk of of saying Audi or Mercedes
