What does the inside of a Fuel Filter look like after 300, 000 miles?

My Toyota Celica 2001 and has a weird setup. It has the REAL fuel filter inside the Gas tank. The set up has a plastic casing around the fuel pump, and inside the plastic casing is the real fuel filter. On the outside, it has a filter sock ( what they call the fuel suction filter) Everyone is saying don't replace the fuel filter, as it's not necessary. But when we took out the old pump -- because the fuel pump was failing -- there was so much dirt and gunk in the fuel filter. The car is 20 years old with 185, 000 miles on it. So it should be replaced. I need to look for the part and replace it before I end up damaging the new fuel pump I put in.
If anyone has the same car as mine google How to replace a fuel filter on a 2001 toyota celica gt? and it should be the first one with the diagram.
Does it seem right? I mean with 185, 000 miles on a 20 year old car, it doesn't make any sense to NOT replace the fuel filter casing/ filter.

I personally have changed many filters out over the years working as a Ford technician, sadly when we would see filters this dirty with poor flow like the one in the video, the fuel pumps would fail within 2 weeks of replacement. The pumps would flat out work themselves literally to death trying to push fuel through. Just a quick note (not trying to bash, the quick release tool was not needed for the first fuel line he disconnected. It would have been a great chance to highlight the difference in fuel line connectors. Great job overall Chris!

I have an intank filter in my r53 mini cooper that I just replaced and was like onyx color really bad, my poor pump was really pushing those 43. 5psi to the rail. my new filter look just like you new one Im happy now it was replaced and fairly simple intank version. Don't forget to push having the Ford specific fuel line removal tool, I have one from my f150 days, good to have.

WOW! Great video! I love the experiment. My 2004 Xterra with 215K just started stalling on me. Fuel filter was the first thing I thought of. It's never been changed. I'll cut the old one open after I change it to see what the inside looks like. I just wish I could hacksaw as fast as you can!

Damn! My car is at 150k miles and I've never changed the filter. I think I'm going to get it done this week and see what other steps I can take to help my engine run a little smoother. I noticed the engine runs a bit rough on idle. Thanks!

Did this on a 4. 0 litre jag that's done over 225k miles. Difference in performance is mind blowing. Like a rocket on wheels. This video could have nearly been toast for our Chris though!
