Speed limits spark debate all over the United States. Do lower speed limits make for safer drivers? Does faster drivers mean more accidents? Or do lower limits save lives? We go back to the first speeding ticket ever written and trace the evolution of speed limits to how theyre instituted today. . Nolan Sykes looks at the history, sociology and psychology behind the cars you love, and the features you might overlook

You forgot to mention a few key facts about the autobahn: 1) only certain sections are unrestricted, between major cities where youre less likely to encounter on/off ramps2) the cars are designed for it, and vehicle licensing is closely scrutinized to ensure only vehicles that should be on the road are allowed (btw, that level of govt oversight costs real money)3) commercial vehicles have placards posted on their backend indicating the top speed that theyre legal to drive, and they do NOT drive in the left lane4) unrestricted sections of the autobahn itself are designed such that insane speeds are safe sweeping curves with gentle banking, deep and resilient road-bases (they last MUCH longer, but cost a boat load we cant even keep our current infrastructure up to par, let alone generate the political will to raise taxes for autobahn-depth road bases, expansive visibility, etc5) the autobahn is kept meticulously clean with massive street sweeper vacuum trucks to minimize the chances that road debris will cause a crash at unrestricted speeds (again, expensive)6) German driving culture Automated road signs will warn drivers of an upcoming traffic jam Stau and drivers in all lanes will turn on their hazards (go figure) to warn drivers behind them as they slow down (because as we all know, brakes lights dont indicate how hard youre hitting the pedal or that youre not going to let up soon, because theres a stau just over the hill that you cant see yet. Also, related to their driving culture, when in Germany and especially on the autobahn, you dont eat or drink ANYTHING while driving. The culturally acceptable way to satisfy your hunger or quench your thirst when road-tripping, is to take care of it at the service station. They almost all have small high-top tables inside the convenience store or on the patio between it and the fuel pumps, where you can enjoy your beverage and snack before getting behind the wheel again. For all these reasons and more, unrestricted speeds make sense on the autobahn and comparing them to American interstates only exposes your ignorance. And NOW you know

Do not speed in North Carolina. I drive armored bank trucks for Loomis Armored U. S. and I have been going 70mph on 55mph speed limit high way in the middle of nowhere for over a year and a half and all of the Sheriff's Deputies know that we are carrying millions of dollars and that we have the need to avoid criminal pursuit from robbery crews(which has happened four times in my career) and let us go by but loan and behold an NC state trooper came behind my truck with his blue lights flashing. I then moved over to the right lane after safely passing a vehicle to see if he wanted to get around me(which often is the case) but he quickly moved over and positioned his patrol car dead center to the back of my truck. I started slowing down to 65, 55, and then 45 hoping that he was just going to give me a road side warning and let me be on my way but he kept his blue lights on and kept on moving at my speed. S. O. B. had me pull over on a hill side and blocked the back of my truck (endangering my crew) and then proceeded to write me a ticket and scolded me for driving 15 over the limit on a low traffic road after I had told him that we had over 25 million that we had to deliver within an hour within the next town 15 minutes away. For an entire year and six months nothing like this has ever happened until now I guess he doesn't like his paycheck getting delivered along with the entire town's

In Vermont the speed limit generally is 50 mph unless otherwise posted but most of the roads are is such rough shape because our legislators pad their pockets and other programs with the money meant for maintaining roads. Doing the speed limit can mean a rough ride on both you and your vehicle. Had a cousin get pulled over once by police because the officer see him swerving all over the road. The officer get to his truck ask him for his license and registration and then proceeded to ask him if he been drinking. He answers no I haven't been drinking I'm just dodging potholes. The road is Route 105 the longest route east to west in Vermont and the road in spots at that time and still is some of the roughest roads probably found anywhere. Vermont doesn't repair roads unless the complaints are so high that they just band aid the road to get them to go away. Often than not they don't do a good job with fixing the road either. It had a rough road sign that stated rough road for the next 7 miles that should tell you how bad the roads are. There is a internet meme on them. It pretty much has the scene from titanic where Leo drowns but its a pothole not the ocean hes in and it says hang on Jack the Vermont road crew is on its way.

This is why we need to copy the germans we need to make it so less people get tickets for speeding but more people get tickets for doing dumbass things like going slow af in the left lanes we should make it harder for people to get their license but keep the limits the same and give out less tickets for speeding but more for other unsafe road acts like going slow or not using blinkers then after a couple years slowly raise the limits and see the difference it would take awhile but in 5 years it would probably help, another thing that would help is have courses that allow people to go at different speeds lets say i can handle going 90 safely but someone else cant they should not be allowed in the left lane and what would be ez for cops to tell before pulling me over is a different color license plate lets say i can handle 90 and above and my car is able to do that i have a red plate someone else cant handle 90 but can handle 80 thats blue and all others have green and need to stay below 80 but you HAVE to stick to that and if you dont immediate ticket and have specific lanes for the colors left is red middle is blue and right is other but this is only on highways or parkways. god im full of good ideas

Lets look at everything. Auto makers keep trying to make faster and faster cars/suvs and the government is well aware. So they keep these low speed limits knowing you wont drive it so they can hand out more 400 dollar speeding tickets and insurance companies can profit as well. Its not the speed its people who cant drive on the roads that kills people. Also they should pass a law when you hit a certain age you should be tested yearly to make sure you are still OK to drive that magic number should be 70 years old. Because if your that person on the road that has the parade of cars behind them because you cant drive the posted 40 mph with both hand gripping the steering wheel for dear life you shouldn't be driving those are the people that panic in a accident situation. My biggest issue is drivers who cant use there side and rear view mirrors properly. Every notice driving in rush hour traffic your moving at a steady pace then all of a sudden you come to a abrupt stop you see a car ahead with his blinker on to change lanes he is holding up the rest of the traffic it was clear to move over 4 times though he doesn't move over. Spend government money on training drivers not speed limits.

Speed Limits ought to survey the ability of average drivers who drive safely, and then suggested speed limits ought to reflect the ability of the drivers, within reason, and not either slow down the traffic or force them to go faster. Most drivers on super highways can travel safely at 75 miles per hour, considering the state of the art of auto construction and design and negotiable views and conditions of the road, and the effects of traffic. It can be argued that safe driving is conforming to the mean average speed, not observing a posted speed limit. Conforming smooth driving to average speed and average distance, creates a safer environment. The driver who does not conform to the flow of traffic creates danger and causes accidents. Driving on city streets is a different environment with different rules, than what is safe on the highway. Electronic guidance in automobiles may revolutionize the concept of a safe speed on the throughways, where in assigned lanes, cars may go up to a 100 miles per hour, because of the assistance of computer aided safe driving.

Not only in Germany. 90% of the roads outside the US have left lane on a highway for overtake only. As for the effects of fast driving, there shouldn't be a maximum speed, but a minimal one. Driving fast stops people from taking their attention off the road. Everybody grips the wheel and concentrates not just starring at their phone and doing the usual driving unrelated stuff. For me i've found out that on a small B road my safe speed is at about 140kph (87mph) durring the day and about 110kph (68mph) during the night. On the highway i usually drive at 200-220 kph (124-137mph) since we don't have speed cameras on the highways and it is illegal for the police cars to hide in the bushes with a radar. The flow of traffic is usually 120-160kph (75-100mph) and the speed limit is 140kph (87mph)Also, correct me if i'm wrong, but i think in Germany it's much harder then the video says. Even over here you're required to have at least 31 hours of practice with instructor and 40 hours of theory.

I would argue that in modern days it could actually be more safe to have no speed limits. So many accidents happen because of texting/being on your phone and not being cautious enough while driving. I live in Germany and almost no one is on their phone while driving 100-150mph (160-240kmh. And because people are potentially driving that fast you are constantly looking in your mirrors and checking really careful before changing lanes. Also you dont have to check your speedometer every 10s because of the fear of a ticket = more looking on the road. Well and following the rules plays a big role. not to offend Americans, but you are probably the only developed country that doesnt like rules as a nation. In other countries it might increase safety, but i doubt it would work in the US since no one wants to listen to anything other than themselfes (in terms of what and what not to do. I hope i could bring my point across, eventough im still learning english. Greetings from Germany: )

National speed limit if 50mph would same millions of gallons of fuel, people do need to slow down and leave for work 10 mins earlier, or find a job closer to home, if you race cars on the track you can run as fast as you want. people leave late for everything because your life is out of order, people use speeding to compensate for laziness and unthoughfulness. I run 120 on interstate for fun not for safety, my car is a street legal race car, it will run 205 if I hold it down. I hope your grandma don't get in the way, or she might become road splatter. Speeders people running 10 to 15mph plus above posted speed limit. cause traffic jams by rushing up on traffic running 5 to 10 mph above posted speed, with nowhere to pass everything gets clogged up they you get the accordion effect which turns into a crawl. and you barely can run 50 mph on the interstate highway system now because of speeders clogging up the traffic flow.

What I have seen and Im sure people will agree with me, lower speeds cause accidents and heres why. Some places have speed limits set at 65 and the unofficial speed limit is 90-100. Drivers will continuously drive at that speed regardless of the speed limit. Lower speeds cause drivers to weave dangerously between lanes. I much rather have a suggested speed limit set to 80 and a hard speed limit at 100 and have the drivers that like to go slow at 70. There will be more space in between cars because of the bigger range of speed that cars can go which will make it easier to switch lanes. The passing lane will be more free as more drivers will have their desired speed. There wont be anymore driving on the shoulder to get around a driver or squeezing through cars to get ahead
