How the 2020 Audi RS6 Avant Could Resurrect the American Wagon WheelHouse nintendork900: I think the reason wagons disappeared is because they simply got too small. Same with sedans which don't sell well. If a family is going to buy a car they want lots of seats and lots of storage. Old wagons held 8 or nine people, old sedans held 6. Now sedans hold 4 comfortably and 5 if you squish and wagons hold 5 if there is no rear facing seats and 7 if there is but they are more cramped than the old ones even when just holding 7 Now the only spacious cars you can get are crossovers or SUV's. If Ford or GM or Chrysler were to start building big wagons and cars again they would probably sell because then you would once again be getting space and seating capacity while also getting a better driving experience and most likely better mileage.

Would NEVER work. Why? The country is still tooooo gaga over fake SUVs (quite a few don't even have AWD) to even notice. It's so bad that one brand (I think it's Ford) is afraid it will have to discontinue another car because of very poor sales. I wonder what will happen when gas prices go up 10 cents a gallon. I know they will be dumping their gas hog 2WD SUVS as fast as they can run. The last time there was a gas price increase (under OBAMA) SUVs lost a ton of resale value and were overcrowding used car lots in several cities I visited. And online, people were posting them for sale and literally begging for anything that got over 33 mpg. Even the ancient GEO Metro was a sought after car because of its 3 cylinder engine.

So, it's nothing crazy, but I see my Ford freestyle as a pretty traditional station wagon. It's crossover sized, but has 3 rows, Wich I use all of. It can carry about as much junk in the back as a pickup can in it's bed. I have helped several friends move with this thing. It has a v6, so fuel economy is not so bad. It's also light enough that it can be driven fairly sportily. I drive for Uber every now and then, in a nearby college town. I drive mostly on Friday and Saturday nights, and the drunken college kids have a lot of fun being tossed around in the back. I had 13 of those mf's in there at once. Hell yeah brutheeerrrrrr

Ok, while I admit/understand that wagons aren't popular, if we're talking straight wagons and not performance wagons which are far and few between; I feel the opportunity was missed in regard to VW. VW has sold wagons in the US since the 80's. From the Quantum wagon, to the Passat and Jetta wagon variants to the new Golf Sport Wagon. Why were these skipped? I own a 5cyl. Jetta Sporwagen and see tons of them around. Not to mention Subaru. the Forester and Outback are the best selling wagons stateside. Not even a hint towards Subies? Damn.

Seeing the fusion go from a sedan, to a wagon like the Mondeo, is one of my Ford wet dreams. I own a 1st generation fusion, and have loved it, but keep thinking to myself how absolutely badass the gen 1 would've looked in wagon form. I pray that instead of cancelling the Fusion altogether, they look at how well the rs6 sells, and any other competitors that attempt to follow, and then make the most badass V6 twin turbo AWD ford station wagon to ever be conceived. THAT is something I would throw my money at like pollen to the air.

I love wagons, I just wish more people did too. I wanted a b7 s4 avant so bad but they are so hard to find so I had to settle for a sedan. I love the car but everytime i see an avant I feel like I let myself down. Nothing gets me going like a good wagon. Especially Audi. The RS6 v10 avant also was a biturbo not just the v10. I wish I was in the market for a rs6 new just to show support but that's way to far above my price range. I cant wait for the biturbo rs6 avant to hit 25 yrs old tho so I can import one just for funsies

I love my Sportwagen. 1. 8L Turbo with spacious cargo space that gets 40+ MPG on road trips. Heated leatherette seats, 8in infotainment with Android Auto, all for under 25k out the door. The value speaks for itself. As for RS6 Avant, it is a wonderful wagon. The value on the other hand is highly debatable. It is telling me that my road trip should be exciting while getting there. What is next? RS12 Minivan? Whatever, I am just bitter that I cannot afford one.

Not a bad video. But you have done a great disservice by not including the E350 wagon, which still has rear facing seats AND could still be had with the AMG63 package. Also, Volvo is still making very attractive and agressive V90. Come on guys. Both of these were way better than any domestic wagon options because both the CTS wagon and magnum had very little cargo volume which made it a pointless wagon- thats why they didnt work.

Still clinging to my '06 A4 Avant. I had the first conversation today (of many to come) w/ an Audi performance shop here in VA about creating the ultimate A4 Avant All Road: 2016 All Road, infused with the S4 3. 0T V6/DSG and all the sporty interior goodies. Nothing can come close. Give us that, Audi. Just give us that. Don't give us all anxiety attacks that our Avant hopes rest on the whims of the uber wealthy.

I love wagons, I drive a Mercedes E-Class Wagon now and love it, it still has rear facing third row seats and Its the only reason I bought it. Without the third row, the vehicle would be useless to me. With MPG being so much better on small crossovers, the wagon just doesn't make sense to a lot of folks anymore. And the performance oriented bunch would do just as well with a sedan.
