I gotta chime in here and say that y'all missed a very big aspect of the Monte Carlo's image an importance as a car: its extensive, ubiquitous presence in dirt-track racing and asphalt to an extent as well. Basically the Monte Carlo for literally at least 30 years has been the Miata of circle track racing: they're cheap (or they were until relatively recently. Dirt trackers have severely cut down on the supply of them. Sorry about that lol, simple, and everywhere. I don't know when it started exactly but I can tell you that I know of many many people racing them in the late 80's/early 90's, typically using the Monte's from the late 70's as they were just an old Chevy by that point, resigned to the scrapyard. And then when my brother and I started racing in 2009, our first racecar was a 1984 Monte Carlo. Even today, the 1980s Monte Carlo and its G-body platform variants are STILL used in circle-track racing. That means the Monte Carlo has seen more continuous use as a racecar for the amateur racer than the freaking MIATA. I know people may look down on it, but circle track racing in the US is by far and away the most popular form of motorsport in America. Add up all the autocrossers you know, all the road racers, and then all the track day enthusiasts as well, and dirt-track racing alone is more than all of them combined. I don't have the exact numbers but IIRC, something like over 75% of automobile racing venues in the US are dirt ovals. And the Monte Carlo's importance to the circle track scene cannot be overstated. That means that if you were to put together a list of the Top 5 most influential cars in American motorsports history, this car would be on that list. I know there's only so much Donut Media can fit into a single Up to Speed video, but I'm saddened to see this incredible aspect of the Monte Carlo be completely overlooked. If y'all are interested in doing a video on this in the future, just let me know and I'd be more than happy to help out. I want to see this car get the recognition it deserves.

Something funny about the 80's montecarlo SS is that the mexican version of the car has a bigger engine, 4 speed hurst trans, torsion bars on the front and the back among other things, it was a bit better than the americam version
