This week on Money Pit, we take a look at answering the age-old question: Is buying someone else s project car a good idea? It seems like a good way to save some money on aftermarket parts that you would end up buying anyway, but it can definitely be a huge can of worms. Come along as we inspect James new project car to see if he made a good move or just flushed his cash down the ol money pit!

That was the first car I owned 26 years ago. God I miss it, even though the SOHC SR5 engine was slower than a pregnant yak. That engine WAS indestructible though. Also, mine sat about 2 or three inches lower. Had skinny wheels tucked up into the wheel wells, no shocks and was riding on boat trailer springs. It was a bouncy boi for sure. I remember hitting a bump, flying up and smacking my head on the roof a few times. It had like zero body roll too lol. I could fly down the highway at 70mph and whip it back and forth between lanes and it would remain perfectly level. So much fun for an 18 year old.

As someone who has purchased someone else s project car, I kinda regret it. I bought a 1998 Lexus ls400. It came with rear metal fender flares, black interior, Godspeed rear arms, and d2 coilovers. I love the car but it s always one problem after another and the rear flares weren t even installed 100% properly so I might try to just buy another ls400 and transfer the coilovers, arms, and possibly interior over. I don t suggest buying a project. It s also missing the front bumper, some ac vents, bolts. Just buy a well maintained car please

Bought basically a shell of someone s s13 drift car and 6 years later it has been through me getting the stock ka24de, auto to manual swap, turbo, to now ls. I sold the entire kat setup to a guy cheap and his car was on the road a few weeks later. Save the s chassis s!

Wanted to point this out because its a safety thing - the roll bar diagonal is made for a RHD car so its on the wrong side for a LHD car. This wont help if you get into a bad situation! You want to have the triangulation above the drivers head.

Cam seals are not easy when you have a 3000gt with an interference engine, 4 cams and since its mounted transversely it gives me about 3 inches of working room. possibly the only worse car ive worked on other than mine is a 300zx lol

Welcome to 80's toyota life too, once you start pushing the car harder you will start breaking parts, and in turn you will have to learn how to fix the car. Being able to work on your Toyota is half of the experience.

Funny enough i'm actually considering selling my project car and it's also an ae86 lol. Wish i could build it myself but i don't have the money or time right now to do so and i hate having it sitting.

I mean I did it, but then it broke down so I SR20det swapped my S13 and had no problems for 8 years, so better have some money on hand when you do buy a project car cuz it def can be a money pit

This is probably not gonna be seen but: check the dipstick gasket. Had a bunch of oil spurt out of my old 4age from there when I couldn't figure out how my oil was getting all over the bottom.

Fun fact: Your '86' is not a real 86 because it's left hand drive. It's actually an 88. Just wanted to squeeze the lemon on the open wound for those who think they got the weeb car.
