Here's Why the Plymouth Prowler Is the Weirdest Car of the 1990s

I had a chance to drive a pristine Plymouth Prowler -- and examine all of its unusual quirks. Here's a review of the Prowler -- including everything weird about it. bobwatters: This car is dumb as hell because hot rods were already popular at this time and they put a v6 in it. I bet this thing would have been a hit if they fit a V8 in there, instead they made it a car for middle aged women that only want a 2 seater i. e. almost no one.

I remember working on these cars at the dealer when they were new. These cars we basically just there to look at they used to fall apart and bend parts because they were all Aluminum the front fenders would fall off, and the most interesting part of all was that the drivetrain was some sort of strange afterthought. The motor was like it would sit in a rear wheel drive car but the drive shaft was bolted to the torque converter not to the transmission. The transmission was a front wheel drive unit but put in the back of the car powering the rear wheels so just imagine driving a car that the motor and trans was not connected?

Wonderful car, the frame was aluminum and surprisingly the brake rotors are also aluminum. However they do require very expensive pads to go on those rotors. And at its curb weight, 250 horsepower is plenty. That motor was used in Formula 3000 racing and to my recollection never ever suffered an engine failure in any race. It is the most reliable engine ever used in racing. And it is also dead reliable on the street if you remember to occasionally change the coolant and the timing belt. The other Advantage is with 250 horsepower you still get 30 plus miles per gallon on the freeway. Probably more given the weight.

I was in my teens when this thing came out. Interesting idea but a typical Chrysler failure including a very cheap plastic interior typical of the brand. But hey, at least they tried to build something exciting. With a modern DCT instead of that dated 4-speed slush box transmission as well as a modern interior this thing could be really good. Or make it an EV: )

Growing up in Greenwich, CT. I once dated Montel William's daughter, and he opened this car. But, there's a more pressing question. I agree with the vast majority of your opinions. When will you fess up, your automotive obsession, vocal inflection, and cranial structure are inherited traits of your biological father, Jay Leno?

In my view, the Prowler was a 90's hot rod I really liked the style of it, even today, it's unusual and strange, and it looks fast But I'd love to take a ride in one these on a summer's evening, just to showoff a little bit with the radio blasting, it's a feel good kinda car to me, you'll turn heads driving this, I'm sure

It looks hideous, however it has one of the coolest names in car history which gets it a pass in my mind. Definitely makes it on my personal top 10 of coolest car names out there. Alongside Jensen Interceptor, De Tomaso Pantera, Corvette, RR Silver Shadow, Saab 9-3 known as Viggen, and so on.

It was apparently designed for very short drivers. I like the weirdness of the cars retro look, but it looks like you'd have to be very short to use it well. I knew a short guy that had one. He thought it would impress the ladies. It did, but not in a good way.

I had a Prowler back when I lived in LA, got as much attention as super cars. Yeah, I agree with Doug 100% rough ride, sluggish with the trans, but it hugged the road, if this had a manual with the 250H. P back then it would have held its own.

They actually modelled it after classic cars from 1920s-30s and hot rods. they spent so much money developing and modelling the body that they ran out of money before everything else. So. that's what we got.
