My brother, a driving instructor, has a 2012 Abarth 500, which hes had from new, it's done 220, 000 miles, the only breakdown hes had was a capillary pipe clip breaking on the thermostat housing at around 160, 000 miles, that was repaired at the side of the road with a jubilee clip which is still there, I also took the catalyst off at 200, 000 miles & it was literally as new inside, a compression test was done around the same time, the readings were still within factory tolerances. so they are reliable cars (as long as you service them correctly. Its had a couple of engine sensors go (temp & cam position, as well as an alternator, but when they went, it didn't stop the car, just put warnings on the dash &/or made it run a little rougher. Yes, some of the trim looks flimsy, but it does last (yours doesn't look like it was very well looked after)Yes, there's been minor annoyances, like a couple of door handle hinges & seat release levers breaking (has levers on his, not webbed straps, has occasional issues with the bluetooth, but overall it's been a great, reliable car that suffers new drivers every day who abuse it without flinching. Sadly it was rear ended (lightly) at the beginning of the year by an Audi & written off by the insurance company (largely because they undervalued it due to the mileage, but we had it back from them & Ill get round to repairing it soon, because we're trying to get it up to half a million miles on the original running gear Im from a Fiat family, between us weve had loads, & contrary to popular belief, they more reliable (when looked after) than many premium cars, like VAG. Sadly, because of their reputation, theyre very cheap on the used market, & because theyre so cheap, people are reluctant to spend money on even basic servicing, which is a shame, because when you do look after them, you basically have a car for life. And as you found out, they give you joy to drive, as do 99% of Italian cars

I have a 2014 Fiat. It's not an Abarth but I still love driving it. At 11: 02 those holes are the microphone for the voice commands. Also, I find myself using the volume control on the back of the steering wheel much more than the ones on the dash. Also, I prefer the LED screen and am dreading getting a car with a touch screen. They're all so clunky and hard to use and have some random operating system that is not as good as a phone. I've used one for a couple of weeks when I had a rental (Nissan I think) that connected with my Android and I hated it so much that a few days before I turned the car in I disconnected it and plugged in an Aux cord. My friend drives a Tesla and when we're out and about, half of the time we end up getting a phone out and turning on Waze because the built-in maps are not as good. Ultimately, I'm going to try to avoid the GD touch screens as long as possible.

I'm an Abarth owner. I agree with much of what Doug says, but I have a couple of nits. Doug's 6'2 or 3. For shorter people (with shorter front occupants) the backseat is usable (5' 8 plus 5' 8 is about the limit. Second thing -- the interior is cheap, but mine is 5 years old. nothing is loose. Nothing is fraying. (I did need to replace the arm rest cushion.

My wife calls it The Zoommie Car The exhaust sounds so wonderful. So Growly. Seven feet of stainless steel pipes without a catalitic converter nor a muffler I have an Abarth and love it. It holds a twelve pack and about 2 bags of ice in the back. No worries, drives like fun, handles the curves like a panther in heat, and looks so cool. Rock on

I'm sorry doug but for 9 grand i can get alot better than a quick shitty shopping cart. For 9k ive seen ram srt10s ive seen multpile clean mustang cobras, wrxs, hyundai genesis coupes nice civic si's ect. Im sure its fun but there are cars that are waaaaaaaaaaay more fun for the same price and they wont be in the shop twice a week

Unfortunately in the US you don't get the newer 595 and 695 models of this car. They're a lot more modern and with better quality, and get up to 180hp with LSDs and valved exhaust, carbon fiber seats and touch screen, amongst other things. Here in Europe they compete with Minis, Fiesta STs and Renault Clio RSs

No a 2004 Mustang GT is the best bang for your buck under 9k because at least it's cheaper and easier to fix. Fiats cost too much to fix here in the states its not worth even getting them. Fiat is even considering completely pulling Fiats from the US market because people realised how shit cars they were

This is a base 500 Abarth. There are several more powerful modelsMy mother had one, original 500 in the seventies. not very reliable, but a lot of fun. She was overtaking everybody. At that time, there were no speed limits on the Belgian highways. A lot of great memories

This is one of those cars that get bashed as being cheap garbage, but you'll probably still see a lot of them 20 years from now, racking up the miles. Yeah, they'll probably look like shit, but simplicity always lasts longer than complexity.
