It was my understanding that catalytic converters now contain a platinum coated material. They are worth bux off older cars still if you take off just the converter. the modern catalytic converters also produce a sulfuric acid mist. That's why ordinary steel tail pipes have short lives from the cat back. Many makers have gone to using stainless in their exhaust, and you can get stainless aftermarket exhausts. However I would think that with all the electronics governing engines today, cats are not really needed. An engine in perfect tune produces little pollution, and the electronics are supposed to keep it always in perfect tune. I don't know if in tune means it doesn't make carbon monoxide or not though. Seems to me it still would. They focus on cars, but 80 to 90 percent of the air pollution is from industry. Now they claim CO2 is a bad thing too. How can something found in sodapop be such a bad thing/ If so, why can't they just figure a way to take it right out of the air and reuse it?

Catalytic converters and mufflers are cool from the factory. I have a problem when emissions tests require these to be present. 99% of people have no desire to remove emissions equipment so why bother enforcing a biannual inspection? Emissions testing should be replaced with safety checks to make sure the car that you're driving isn't complete junk. I would kill to have the cats taken off my sports car. The turbo would be able to breathe so much better!

Scotty i bought a 2009 Nissan altima 2. 5 s with a bad transmission for 200. The car will idle and rev fine in park, also drives fine until up to operating temperature. The rpms will not go up when stopped even if the pedal is floored. Many articles say this can be fixed by replacing the stepper motor in the cvt. Any tips and tricks to get this car driving again? (194k miles, junk or fix? i m only 250 dollars into this thing)

You mechanics will probably hate me for this but I say build a custom exhaust system after the catalytic using a magna-flow or something, keep the catalytic converter if you don't want a serious fine. Don't cut any of your factory pipes because you might need to throw it back on before an inspection, just take the darn thing off the rubber hanger and unbolt from the converter (if your exhaust system allows for that.

Scotty, what's the best way to make Catalyst Not Complete to be READY in your thoughts, assuming all other codes are good. a drive cycle, how long, at what RPM, speed, or just rev engine outside garage for a bit of time? On this video says run engine hot enough to make catalytic converter hot. what's your take over the years in your experience.

Great video. Very informative. Mufflers & catalytic converters are great for most cars. Sports car should have more free-flowing mufflers. The aftermarket market takes care of that. All sports car should use that quad catalytic converter that the late vipers had. Saves more horsepower and is even cleaner.

If you added some type of heat exchanger between the catalytic converter in the muffler wouldn't the cooler air flow better through the rest of the exhaust system because it would reduce the air pressure and also run more efficiently?

After watching this I put back my muffler because of noise pollution and air. Then I took it out because noise is better in cars because Scotty will make another vid saying why should we have mufflers.
