Honda during the 70 s used a similar approach with their CVCC engine. It used a small extra valve sitting next to the spark plug that introduced a higher fuel/air mixture that could be easily ignited by the spark plug. The regular intake valve introduced a lean fuel/air mixture to the rest of the cylinder to get a similar effect.
The 78 Honda Accord that I owned for about 15 years was a go-getter and would get 35 mpg on the highway and 30-32 mpg in town. All of this through a normally aspirated carbureted engine!
I wonder if Mazda Engineers were waiting for Honda patents to expire to do this with a fuel injected engine, or if it is just a coincidence?

An engine like that could be a mechanic's nightmare to diagnose. Just a slight bit off on the combustion cycle could render these engines problematic. We have to wait and see what TSB's and recall's will be issued to solve driveability problems with this new technology. On paper it all looks well and good, but the vehicle must perform well as its age increases. Customers should get extended warranties on these vehicles also to protect there finances. Thank you Scotty. Richard's Mobile Auto and Air

I'm not in anyway questioning the engineering and the tecnology behind these engines. I know they're top notch. But also the complexity is top notch. How many mechanics will be able to repair those things? And what about their reliability? Look at hybrids. To get one repaired is a mess! No thank you. For me, only electric from now on. I still have an internal combustion, and I am still waiting for my electric.

Had heard of the technology but never delved into it, interesting, will governments yet again have a change of heart, against electric it's only a 3 minute fill for say 600 mls against probably amany hours for EV's
Lexus has a variable stroke moter to do the same thing, more complicated, but they are thinking
Peyrol/dieselheads we aint done yet!

Only 90% of the world functions in environments where an electric engine isn't a viable option. Longer distances, rural travel, and insufficient electrical grid access only challenges an extreme majority of the planet. Mazda has made a brilliant move and helps move the vast majority of the planet toward higher efficiencies.

hi Scotty? - what is your opinion of turbine engines used during Indy 500? Could turbine engine on a smaller scale be used to generate for electric automobiles today? my memory of turbine racing engine far out-performed piston engines - - transmissions could not stand up to the torque of turbine your opinion? Thanks!

It's said their electric MX30 will get a Skyactive X rotary engine to charge the batteries.
I drive the former Skyactive G 2. 0, tuned to 170HP and quite easily reach 45MPG.
Tests however with the Skyactive G against the X in normal road driving conditions showed no difference in fuel economy.

Engineers of the Skyactive-X engines had to use compressor-charger and mild-hybrid system to achieve these economy numbers. The numbers are quite similar to Toyota Hybrid with their simple gas-engine and bunch of electronics and HV-battery. THS looks more reliable and it is time-proven after all.

Saw that this new engine has a DOC and DPF in the exhaust like newer diesels do. If they perform like the other after treatment systems currently out. Man, these will become a huge headache. Will eventually need regeneration to clean them out also. Looks good on paper.
