This is somewhat of a ghost station. I wanted to travel between Sweden and Finland by train but I found out that that wasn't possible. There weren't enough passengers anymore to make the trip feesable anymore. I had to catch a bus from Lulea to get to Haparanda, which was a few hours journey. Then another bus from Haparanda to Kemi, which wasn't too far over the border.
In former years, it was possible with a change of trains at this station in Haparanda. It's a very interesting station indeed, as a few hundred meters past the station is the only railway connection between Finland and Sweden over a beautiful looking bridge. As seen in the film, the bridge has 2 guages. This is because Finland uses the russian wide guage for their railway network, which is incompatible with the standard European guage.
For this, there are 2 railway yards, 1 here in Haparanda and the other across the river in Finland. Plans are being made to close one of the yards and to transfer the cargo between trains at 1 yard only. I asked some locals and they said the bridge is rarely used anymore. which was hard to believe. One lady said there are only a few trains every month & the occasional passenger train in winter to transport people to some kind of skiing region.
I would have loved to have seen a train crossing that beautiful bridge. The structure in the centre marks the border, which is also the deepest point in the river between the countries
