I recommend Tully. It has a lot of cane and lots of track. Also has mission beach where at sunset you can sit and be still. All of a sudden the beach seems to be moving. Hundreds of fiddler crabs come out of their burrows and wave at each other. Also Tully has a major mill you can smell it miles away. Ayr and home hill are also worth a visit all that coast from Townsville north is worth a look. I lived in Townsville and Bowen where I ran a pizza shop. Still remember quiet nights driving up a hill on the beach and hearing the boom boom sound of the sea going tugs out at sea returning to port. Magic times. Best day of my life was a trip to magnetic Island off Townsville. Can't live there any more too hot for this Expat Kiwi.

I've never been there, but it's the most exsited trip on railway, for sure!
