welcome to this trip report bound to the North of France with Intercités. First trip report with Intercités. - TRIP INFORMATION - Railway company: SNCF Intercités Train type: Corail coaches VTU/VU From: Paris Gare du Nord to Boulogne Ville N° of train: 2025 Duration: 2h55
Date: 2024-01-09

french trains are always dirty and covered with mud etc. seems to be a combination of high speed and their soil and general track laying. lots of splashback when it rains. NS (dutch) had the same issue in the 90s but i see they have improved. SNCF generally runs their equipment into the ground. a japanese would probably faint if they saw the state of the tgv zooming around at 320kph. but despite all that, their safety record says cosmetics and rattling panels dont matter

Those coaches will be scrapped? --- Cuban railways is in urge need of coaches, and they operate French equipment too. I wish they sold them cheap or donate them to 3rd word countries to expand their lives. Cuba has been operating the old French TEE coaches for the past 20 years.

I love the Corail trains. They are comfy. I used them a lot in the late 90s when I was a student in Pau, travelling to either Toulouse or Bayonne / Hendaye. I also did a corail trip from Paris to Amiens and back and on the TER Bourgogne from Fontainebleau to Paris.

In Portugal, we still have Corail coaches on the Intercidades ( Intercity) service. Until a few years ago CP ( the Portuguese national railway company ) also used the same locos on the Intercity trains.
reply

corail trains made a revolution on train travel for their unique design more advanced on its time all those beautiful trains instead of a modernisation they are going for scrap because of european rules

I hope that you can see the Amfleet Coaches ft. Siemens ACS-64 Cities Sprinter (Replaced the EMD-ASEA AEM-7 -Toaster-, and Bombardier-Alstom HHP-8)
reply

Nice! Equivalent to the Intercity coaches in my country (Portugal. The main difference being the stainless steel used in the Portuguese version.

I have travelled a lot, always preferring the trains, and these Corail coaches have the most comfortable seats I have ever seen.
reply

Merci beaucoup. I purchased an old Lima HO Scale Trainset with SNCF coaches and was wondering what it looked like in real life.
reply

Nice trip report the seats on those trains look very comfy hopefully they will recycle them on other trains needing refurbishment
reply

Is it already known in the meantime when the Corail carriages will be replaced by new stock? I hope not anytime soon though: D
reply

So funny, the intercity trains in Portugal are exactly the same. I never travelled on a french corail coach though.
reply

Nice train ride and I totally agree. SNCF should refurbish these Corail carriages and not scrap them.

The 8 persons per compartments are great if you are travelling with a large group of friends. A group of 8.
