Welcome to this trip report through the French Riviera onboard a very special TER service. - TRIP INFORMATION - RECORDED IN OCTOBER 2019 Railroad company: SNCF TER PACA Train type: Corail coaches and BB22000R From: Saint Raphael Valescure to Marseille Saint Charles Time: 1h44 Price: -29
Date: 2024-01-09

Comments and reviews: 23

as a student with my family and also alone I often travelled from Rotterdam to/from Paris Gare du Nord with the TEE 'ile de france'/etoile du nord': great corail coaches and 1class comfort. Lunch or dinner was better between Brussels and Paris (french cook. Later there was an old TEE sold to Cuba and formed a sort of express between Havana and Santiago de Cuba, called 'the french train'. I took it once; it lasted for 15 hours or so I remember.

Meanwhile SNCF replaced Corail cars on medium-distance services, Portuguese-built Coral is still the backbone of CP's Intercity service in Portugal.
Benjamin could trip to Portugal to make a review of Intercidades, the local Intercity train service, and high-speed Alfa Pendular tilt train. There are Corail and Sorefame on operation, but CP brought many Arco cars and these ex-Renfe ones will run soon on Portuguese railways.

nice video, but your brave leaving your things while you did your walk about, especially between Toulon and Marseille! though its not as bad as Marseille to Arles, the toilets have been that way for about 20 years now, if they don't clean them in Marseille they stay like that for ages, i used to do the mini bars on the trains so i do know

Awesome video as always! I can not have enough of Corail reviews, you have done many but they're all different! :)
Also I believe PACA now does have First Class on some TERs on this line (not 100 percent sure but worth a check. TER from Paris to Tours for example does have a valid first class although it is a TER.

Dear Thibault, nice video. And -that you showed the place for bicyles. A few questions. 1. Are some of the Corail coaches being converted for sleepers/night trains? I thought I read something about that. 2. If so, could you make video in the factory of the conversion? Keep up the good work!

DB is also closing Ticket Offices and replacing them with a screen where you can talk to a representative in a call center. Not the best solution but it-s great to have service with real humans that can speak to you. (Of course only at smaller stations, bigger stations will still have them)

We have a voltage switchover like that just up the road from me in Matawan, NJ but having electrified rail service in the US is definitely the exception rather than the norm. I'm always envious of seeing how commonplace it is throughout Europe!

Oh, I remebered in the summer of 2019 when me and my family travelled by train down to Cap D'ail, close to Monaco, and from Marseille to Nice and we were on one of these trains, and it was super cramped, so we wouldn't get a seat until Antibes
reply

Oh yes the red corail coaches. In 2019 you weren't the only person that was taken by surprise, as back in August I was doing a little bit of spotting at Vienne station (about 30km south of Lyon) and that took me by surprise too.

I am sure I read somewhere in the railway press recently that SNCF is proposing to use Corail coaches on new low cost services where time is not so important to the passenger. There are plenty stored that is for sure.

The funny thing about electrification is, Ventimiglia station as the other terminus of the 25 kV French Riviera line, is electrified under 1, 5 kV which none of the lines terminating there use. FS uses 3 kV.
reply

a video showing all the different types of corail coaches would be good. ie baggage, bicycles, driving control vehicles, restaurant, children's play area, buffet, cinema etc. etc.
reply

a separate dedicated Corail passenger car video in honor of their 44th anniversary would be amazing! the report is well made! good luck to you!

those articulated new replacements your train passed don't look strong at all, might they've had/have teething problems, for example?
reply

Always nice to see a trip report from my home station. Especially when I was just there like 20 mins ago -

I love the humming sound while acceleration on the BB22300/BB7200 locomotives. It's really pleasing.
reply

Always good to still see classic stock like this rolling!
Great report -

If the cars are in good condition. why scrap them? They couldn-t be sold off?
reply

I prefer the old ones with the leather, loved to smoke on those. Good times!
