Funny enough. I have actually taken Via Rail along the Toronto to Montreal corridor. But I only went as far as Ottawa. Because that's where some of my family live. One thing you need to learn simply railway is that there is a lot of scenic views along the corridor. At one point you even parallel highway 401. At another point down the line you parallel lake Ontario. And for a good chunk of it up to Ottawa. You see a lot of farmland. Take it from somebody who's done the trip from Toronto to Ottawa a dozen or so times. It's quite the experience for a new person. But I agree with you on how via rail handles their boarding and whatnot. Tbh, it doesn't really bother me. Like I said I've done the trip from Toronto to Ottawa/Ottawa to Toronto a dozen or so times. My mom and I have mainly gone up to Ottawa to see some family for Christmas time. But there has been one time where we went out during the spring. Looking forward to when you finally cover the go transit. One line I recommend you take a look at is the Milton line. During the morning. It runs from Milton to Toronto and during the afternoon it runs from Toronto to Milton. I haven't done the full length. But I do know trains go by my building every half an hour or so. I live next to a very active CP rail facility. And at times the Milton line just zooms by my building. It's quite a sight.

This boarding procedure seems awful. Like you said, why does the weight of your luggage matter?
I am really glad that in most of the european countries you just go to the station, get on the platform and hop on your train. If you are clever, you look up the arrangement of the cars on the displays and know, where your coach (if you have a seat reservation) will come to a stop. This way the whole boarding process takes very little time. Even at larger stations it takes maybe three minutes for the passengers to get off and on and the journey can continue. And you can take as much luggage as you can carry with you (and I have done that way too often, but the aisles have to be kept clear in case of an emergency evacutation. On most of the long distance trains in Germany there is plenty of luggage space (racks) available, so this is not a problem.
So in my opinion these dedicated boarding times, weight controls and ticket inspection at the doors before boarding are just annoying, take too much time and are inefficient. Also in lots of european stations it would not be possible to occupy a track in a major rail hub for this long, because there is so much traffic.
Besides these inconveniences it seems to be a nice trip and you made a good and entertaining video about it. Greetings!

I live in montreal, i'll tell you all why our country do not have HST (Hight speed train):
Our govenment and our ppl (Mainly in quebec) LOVE to debate on everything and anything, even tho it is possible to have a HST, all the dabates are taking place since the early 2000's and now they are doing the same thing on this debate: Do we need a high speed train or do we need to put more trains of the same speed on the tracks?
We need a HST and we need a way to cut off the prices since our train cost way to much, but untill our government finally decides what they'll do and when the population will finally understand that it is too important to do dumb debate when they know litterally nothing about how HST works, I hope this day arrives. What is pretty sure is that we will soonly have awnsers since Ottawa oppened up recently to the idea aand started requesting quotes/projects to the differents train enterprises.
BTW to all the ppl who say that HST are not possible in quebec, it was true 10-15 years ago, since the technology have changed and all, we need to make other studies but currently no argument is available. We'll let the experts/engeneers tell us that because we definitly know nothing about this subject unless we've done studies on the subject.

I am still wondering, that Canada has still no High Speed Railnetwork. Around countries building High Speed Railnetwork, like Indonesia, Thailand, Malysia as well also African Countries. When you travel in Europa for exempla you will never see so old Passenger train. The Eurostar Train from Paris to London runs 12 daily or from Frankfurt, Germany to Paris runs 17 trains daily. Also in Europe you need never weight your luggage and the Tickets will be checked when the train already is running, You board on secound class or First Class depend witch ticket you bought, by your self. One wehave to see European Countries invest Billions of Euros in the infrastractur and in trains, Alone the Swiss National Railway, SBB bought for 2 Billionen Dollar new Trains as well the Deutsche Bahn they ordert for 1. 5 Billionen Euro neu High Speed trains. Then more and more people use the train and not anymore cars or planes for short distances. I mean distance from about 1000 km, you need not longer then with a plane and faster then with a car.

Enjoyed your video and I believe I might an answer to several of your questions about VIA Rail and what you encountered on your trip. VIA tries to board the trains at least 20 minutes before departure, but sometimes the trains have not arrived at Union from the shop. Reasons for these delays can range from all tracks occupied or there was a delay coming from the shops because of rail (GO) traffic. Another question you brought up was that VIA should run High Speed train Toronto to Montreal. Forty years ago the trip took less than 5 hours, BUT since the huge increase in freight rail traffic by CN, the tracks are heavily used. CN OWNS THE TRACK AND HAS PRIORITY OVER PASSENGER TRAINS. Hence you will not see VIA high speed trains ON CN lines. VIA is making noises about creating a high-speed from Montreal thru Ottawa to Toronto running on the old and not used CP line from Ottawa to Peterborough. I wouldn't try and book a ride for a while.

canada is not known for having an easy, stream line process
i had to call EI to tell them to take off the correct amount of taxes because they only take off a portion of what you need so then at the end of the year, you end up owing them money. that you dont have. because youre on ei
so i had to waste my time, calling in, going through all the steps to speak to someone, tell them that they should be taking off. you know. my taxes automatically.
to which she had to put me on a hold and read out a statement, me acknowledging the change in the tax.
to which i replied, Lady. you realize this is a GIANT waste of time, costing me time, you time, gov paying you to do this, more people on hold over something that shouldnt even have to happen
people on EI shouldnt be taxed at all to start but even if you are going to tax them, at least automatically do it so that we dont have to waste time with this nonsense

The reason because we don't have much creativity in Canada is due to the rules and regulations all over any kind of activity.
The -airport- approach on the train service is just one proof.
Years ago we tried to come back from Halifax to Toronto by train and found out that the prices of the airline was only $50 more, let alone that the flight was only 45 minutes, when the train would have taken most of the day.
On top of that we have the same allowance as in a plane for our luggage and when we asked if it was possible to bring our furniture in the train they told us that VIA RAIL doesn't provide -that kind of service-.
We might be the only nation in the world that expend money we don't have to benefit cars and trucks makers.
Way to go Canada, we are going down along with our neighbours in the south with their silly ways.
Greetings from Toronto.

Our trains in Australia your only allowed an small bag in the carriage and its weighs? anything else is weighed it to has to be below? and put in the luggage compartment. this is to keep the trains like planes stable and not overweight which may cause balance and traction issues. I have been on an overweight train at high speed, people were being thrown of there seats, falling into the laps of other passengers, food trays were flying, luggage was falling of racks, people were screaming and being sick. it was horrific so I get in especially when you don't have seat belts. I couldn't sit for 5 hrs sitting staring at or being stared at by the person opposite or riding backwards, that's for city travel not long country journeys. getting on board was for the young, fit no step or assistance so dangerous & what do disabled people do not travel. interesting journey

The cost of installing high-speed right of way in the Montreal-Toronto corridor (or any corridor for that matter) depends on two factors: 1) insanely prohibitive cost of designing, installing and maintaining said right of way in the equally insane weather conditions therein; and 2) no, absolutely no, interface with local traffic - no level crossings, farm fencing, houses, anything really that can't withstand many tons of metal at very high speeds. Name me one northern country that has a climate like ours and successful high-speed rail. That said, the weighing baggage thing has me stumped, unless it's union regs regarding staff humping checked baggage. I've always carried my own baggage on board, and its never been weighed. I did not load my baggage on the Trans-Canadian (but we had a roomette and that's what you pay for.

Your criticisms of VIA are spot on. I have one further one that may not have bothered you and that is although they like to think they-re like an airline they don-t take care of your luggage for you. I can no longer check my bags at my local station and as someone who is older I am finding it harder and harder to hump my luggage up and down the steep stairs onto the train and you certainly can-t count on getting help from staff, especially in Toronto. When I travel I-m connecting through Toronto which means lugging my bags up and down the stairs twice - You were lucky to get the comfort of the 1980s car, the seats in the newest cars as you said, are very uncomfortable. I-ve used the train for decades and seen the ups and downs. What VIA, Union Station and my local station offer right now is definitely a down.

I took this exact train before. And I mean they even decoupled the ottawa bound train in brockville and I remember that very yard. My toilet experience was however much worse. When I went to the washroom in my coach, the toilet bowl was filled with water that was brown and it had soggy bread bits in it (someone must have had a bad meal onboard) even worse, due to the intense rocking of the train, the fluid was spilling everywhere in the small room. I ended up getting out of that horrid place with wet shoes and a very bad experience. I can't imagine why anyone would care about this, just thought I would share.

There is actually waiting area in the hall, just behind some columns. I don't understand why so many people are queueing up for more than half an hour when there are seats to sit on. I often sit there and wait until most people have gone and then I join the end of the line. The one-door boarding is pretty strange and rare though. I have taken VIA several times, including between Montreal and Toronto, but never seen them doing this. Usually staff will stand at each door using hand gesture and their voice to tell you which car it is, and people board at each car.

Keep in mind the Trans Canadian Highway didn't even have a two lane paved road to Winnipeg north of Lake Superior until the mid 1960s. Nearly thirty years after the government promised Nunavut a deep water port they are still waiting for one. There is no paved highway to Canada's Arctic Ocean coast. Commerce connections are so lacking in Canada its no wonder very little of it has been developed. Transit should NEVER trump commerce. Transit doesn't develop the economy, commerce does!

This is an interesting video to watch and I can't help but compare it to inter city services and interstate services here in Australia. I'm absolutely gobsmacked VIA Rail have a luggage weight policy. And the boarding process in Toronto was ridiculous. Here in Australia I've travelled on the Sydney to Melbourne daylight XPT service which takes 11 hours. You simply rock up, board any carriage, dump your luggage and off you go!

I took the train many times from Toronto to New Brunswick in the 80's. (when I was single) I will never do it again because it is cheaper to drive. (when married) Round trip for two people on a train, around $536+hst =$605. 68 plus plus (car rental, taxi, uber. Gas is around three fuel tanks one way. total around $300+$300 =$600 (a lot of cars get better gas mileage than this, I drive a SUV) 21 hrs on train 16 hrs driving.

When I lived in Canada I also found the lining up for the train baffling - though generally I arrived at Union ten minutes before departure and walked straight on. Canadians love to queue even more than Brits. I understand people queuing it a bit if a hangover from the days when seats weren-t assigned. I still find Amtraks boarding process even worse, esp as they don-t reserve seats so you feel you have to be there early.

Luggage is weighed for safety so the crew on board is NOT subject to a hurt back etc from lifting over heavy bags into the luggage rack and because the overhead compartments are only so big. The later boarding is due to a train coming in and needed to be turned and used for another route within a 60-90 min gap. If you dont like to line up for transport try driving. Buses, planes and trains all have lineups.

-the current state (of Union Station) looks run down-. you must realize they are just finishing a 10 year long renovation of the entire station. why does this corridor not have highspeed rail? well you answered the question yourself - the population and amount of ridership cant support the cost of it. plus Canada is an ass backwards fearful nanny state.

Canada seems to really enjoy making travel as dog shit as possible, which makes people chose cars (own or rent) far far more, which is the opposite of what they want, what with all the climate change stuff.
I don't know anyone who would willingly take a train vs renting a car.
I take the train when I do because I have to, I don't want to lol.

For real, the boarding system is asinine and terrible. Just have people wait on the platform like the GO commuter system and it will be faster for everyone.
STOP TRYING TO BE AN AIRLINE, YOU'RE A PASSENGER RAIL SERVICE. The reason many people ride VIA is because airports suck. Why are you turning yourself into an airline?

We travel by Via going west to Alberta. We have done the trip 4 times and the train is never on time as there are many freight trains. We get off in Edmonton and rent a car and then drive the rest of the way to Terrace BC. We enjoy the scenery on the train, the staff is very helpful and the meals are fantastic.

Just a few things, you don't have to line up as the seats are all assigned, you could literally just show up a few minutes before your train leaves and hop on. If you carry a suitcase they'll weigh it (if you just have small baggage or a backpack/purse they won't weigh it.

By the way, you don-t have to line up. I sit in one of the waiting areas until there are just a few people left in line before I join in. Seats are assigned so there is no advantage to getting on early to select the best seat as we used to do in the -old days- -

Totally agree with the luggage weight thing. But you probably just ran into an over-zealot Via Rail employee. He/she was probably trying to get promoted. You will run into those people in every industry.

Why is the introduction so noisy, completely unnecessary. Noise for noise sake, creating drama. Now I switch off, you might have had great content but you drive people away through poor editing choices.

I think the issue with high-speed rail in Canada is the same in the USA. More people live in suburbs in the cities. So we all drive and / or fly.
I mean with how far are cities are as well.

You can go 500km on a train for 76$ or you can go up the CN tower for 74$. at least it was 74$ a couple years ago. it's probably higher now. I couldn't believe how expensive it was.

Also, you have an assigned seat on VIA. So no need to queue. just sit down and get up when boarding has started. Why would you stand around for 40 minutes?

The trains and bullet trains in Japan run more efficiently than VIA Rail without any of that nonsense. The stations have better service and amenities, too.
