Hola! This morning, Iryo was launched in Spain, and I was among the first passengers to enjoy the latest high-speed train operator in Spain. ! - TRIP INFORMATION - RECORDED NOVEMBER 2022 (FIRST DAY OF OPERATION) Railroad company: Iryo (ILSA) Train type: ETR 1000 From: Barcelona Sants to Madrid Puerta de Atocha Time: 2h30 Price: 55- for Infinite class Thumbnail picture: Bernat Borràs on Flickr
Date: 2024-01-09

Looks really good! Just one thing I really don-t like about these (and Frecciarosa trains in Italy) is that they decided to go for vinyl flooring rather than carpet! I know it-s easier to clean and maintain but it (along with all of the other hard leather/plastic/metal surfaces and the questionable brown colour scheme) makes the ambiance in the carriage feel really echoey/loud and a little bit clinical. Even if the seats themselves aren-t as comfy, the overall ambiance of the DB ICEs is -waaaay- nicer with soft finishes and way less sterile lighting. -I just really hope the variant specified for HS2 in the UK takes a leaf out of Siemens book rather than following Hitachi-s trend of pretty appalling interiors!

I always enjoy your weekly video outings. I've taken a train several times, but NOT overnight. I'm one that needs quiet and my bed not moving. But, We'll see soon if I can sleep on a train. BTW< November 25th, 2021 or 2022?
In the U. S, We have Amtrak Nationally, while there are interstate, and Regional carriers. But, as Fright has priority here it will take those companies to allow higher speed competition in giving an alternative to flying.

I am surprised that with the same train, basically iryo is doing a far better job that trenitalia.
I never saw frecciarossa 1000 reaching most of its top speed in Italy, can't say about food because I travelled in economy class because the prices in italy are insane. The train information screen most of the time didn't work in italy and for many other such reasons they are getting spanked by italo on their home turf.

Thanks for the review. I'm based in the South, so will give Iryo a go in 2023. Competition is a good thing for customers, but the market needs more international routes if we are going to cut air travel in Europe. Plus, in Spain almost all high speed services radiate from Madrid. Filling in the gaps for cross-country routes is taking a long time.

Looks really interesting. You have to remember this is a private sector and not a nationalised rail service. I don-t have a problem with this and it-s good to see there are many operators on the same line. For each glamorous high speed service there are too many average infrequent services in Spain using old outdated rolling stock.
reply

Insane how cheap this is. Just checked prices and you'd be paying 21 euros at most for a singular class trip on 1/2. Meanwhile for a shorter distance and a longer trip you'd pay some 30 euros -at best- for Thalys from Amsterdam-Paris (and that's at the worst times as well. We badly need high speed rail liberalisation in all of Europe.

Great to see infrastructure being used by more than one operator. Here in Canada the one measly operator we have (Via) can't even hardly use the tracks because of greed and domination by the freight carriers. Best way to stop people endlessly flying is to build more high speed train lines and promote access and competition.

Barcelona Sants reminds me of Birmingham New Street. If you're British, you know. Sants has a similar feel to New Street.
In recent times, it has improved. However, it's one of the worst major UK stations. I use it a lot and it's terrible.
Sants feels similar, but they have high speed rail services -

ANOTHER SPANISH CON TRICK!
-Iryo- is simply another train brand name. NOT A NEW COMPANY. It is part of the Spanish National Railways (RENFE. By having multiple brand names it is a marketing ploy to make people -THINK- that it is some sort of new private Franchise. Everything in Spain is corrupt!

reply

I agree with you, Barcelona Sants station is nasty (I have to commuter here every day) Security checks Don-t allow you to feel that you are in a train station. I think we are the unique country in EU that pass security controls (Frecciarossa in Italy is a de light)
reply

The infrastructure and the quality of service in Spain looks very impressive.
It-s interesting by the way to observe how many passengers continue to wear face coverings versus not. The political jurisdiction appears to really make an impact on this.

Great video about Iryo and this new service. I was wondering as a railway expert, if you know about any other HSR in Europe besides the MAD-BCN where you can find three different operators: Renfe (AVE/ Avlo, SNCF (Ouigo, Trenitalia + Globalia (Iryo?
reply

I much prefer the facing seats, with the table in the middle, but I see that they went for the denser airplane layout.
Indeed the ETR400 (ETR1000 is not a real class number) has a good ride, but the ETR500 is much more confortable.

reply

This is in my opinion Spain's best train. I am going to ride them in August
My list for HSTS im Spain would be
1. Iryo
2. AVE
3. AVLO
4. Ouigo
Also, your videos are some of the best on the whole world

Very enjoyable trips we had with Iryo. Barcelona to Madrid. Madrid to Seville. Thanks to Spain and the beautiful Spanish people for the great experience. Wish we have them in the US!
reply

55- for a 600km trip in first class AND the food is included? that-s incredibly cheap and a perfect example why we need competition on the rail too. I want Trenitalia in Germany too-
reply

As a Spaniard I never been on a long train journey within my country, and I would like to have that experience. This train company looks amazing and chic! Fantastic review! --
reply

Looking forward to all of these high speed companies expanding to the south (Seville, and hopefully Cadiz. And hopefully the quality will stay high. Great video.
reply

Finally, a train company that noticed that they have to offer as great service as an airline. This breakfast is even better than on any European business class.
reply

I can not understand how Ouigo and Iyro can work in Spain while renfe can not in France or Italy. Brussels claim for the liberalisation in whole Europe not just in Spain
reply

I think iryo is going to be a hard competitor to Ave, I think a lo anb ouigo are other league. I wish iryo thw best, I used them in Italy and was a good experience.
reply

I don't agree with liberalisation being as promising as you paint it, and I hope that Switzerland never follows suit. But otherwise great video as usual!
reply

I hope tren italia comes to Germany too. The service and the quality of the seats are very bad in german trains. But that will probably never happen.
reply

could this train operate in the uk, we should improve our infrastructure like the Europeans like double decker's a lot of leg room long platforms and more
reply

I traveled from Madrid to Barcelona a few years ago on the Renfe high speed. The train coolly made top speed of 200 km/h which I thought was great.
reply

Be careful: -30 charge per suitcase. On the train station when they check your ticket, they will look at your suitcase and demand -30. Shameful
reply

10: 54
Initial class is in coaches 6, 7 and 8
Singular is in coaches 5 and half of coaches 4 because in c 4 there is a special place to eat

reply

Thank you for totally ROCKING that Kansas City Current, National Women-s Soccer League sweatshirt in the bathroom! That was fabulous! -
reply

Really clean and comfortable, and fast. But next time can you ask, when are they going to stop ordering people wearing the bloody masks?
reply

I didn't understand from the video and I want to ask: do they check the luggage on a scanner like they do at airports before a flight?
reply

I wonder how Spain decide to use italian trains when according to spaniards spanish trains are the best in the world.
reply

They should've invited you to the Press Conference. I guess you have a larger audience than some of the journalists there. -
reply

I so want to take this! Just have to get to Spain first. never been, not sure which city I'd want to go to first!
reply

This is amazing! Props to Spain! In Romania, the itinerary would take around 11-12 hours for the same amount of km.
reply

very cool to see trenitalia expansion. I wonder why in spain they had this different approach compared to france though
