Buna ziua everybody! Welcome to this new trip report onboard the best way of traveling. Night trains of course! The Euronight Dacia one on my bucket list since a long time, that trip turned out even better than expected despite a rough start! - TRIP INFORMATION - RECORDED IN JUNE 2022 Railroad company: CFR Calatori Train type: WLABmee sleeping car 70-71 From: Vienna Hbf to Gara Bucure-ti Nord; Time: 20h18 Price: 149
Date: 2024-01-09

The reason for the delay at the departure is that the train arriving from Cluj-Napoca got delayed by more than 2 hours (seen at 2: 19. Originally Dacia had all its stock resting in Vienna through the day, since it arrives in the morning and goes back in the evening - including the passenger (seating) cars attached/detached at Budapest. Then MAV came up with the idea of using the CFR and MAV passenger cars of Dacia to assemble another train that leaves Vienna in the morning a couple of hours after Dacia arrives, goes through Budapest to Cluj where it arrives in the evening. This replaces one of the MAV trains on the Budapest - Cluj route and doesn't let the rolling stock idle. Next day the train leaves Cluj in the morning and arrives to Vienna in the afternoon, in time for the passenger cars to be rotated into Dacia again. The drawback is that a delay of one of the trains can affect the other.

Remember the horror train crash in Greece? Those trains were travelling super fast. By comparison, there was a train crash in Romania recently: just some head bumps, as the trains were slow. Lesson? Keep them slow and safe! Improve cleanliness, and quality of service, put some new paint on Gara de Nord outside as it looks as old as Burebista: ) We have outstanding old train stations, with a lot of history behind, and they can challenge the beauty of other stations in Europe, if we upgrade them a bit, re-paint re-furnish. And get that garbage around Chitila cleaned up! What a shame: everyone is talking about it on TV, but no-one is doing much. Get two lorries and a tractor and clean it up!

I can't believe you do this willingly and for fun. I traveled to the sea side on a 12 hours train to Constanta a few years ago. There were faster options, but someone in our group decided it would be cool if we took the slow, scenic route as well. It was a huge mistake. After a few hours locked into one of these tin cans you really run out of things to do and you start contemplating on the meaning of life. After you realize your socks are literally glued to your feet and that the air conditioner is not working you wonder why are you friends with that guy to begin with

I would say that the route towards Brasov is more scenic and faster than the one along the Danube.
Also, you mentioned the Astra train you want to check. They founded their own private company called Astra Trans Carpatic with brand new carriages being built (green with yellow just for reference if you look for it. Even in 2nd class the seats are just awesome. They usually operates from Arad (western side of Romania) to Bucharest. And they have these private compartments as well. Maybe you can give it a try.

the railway in Romania was a symbol of the communist regime, or so i've heard. so when it fell, the railway was largely abandoned, ppl preferring to travel by car. and the gov did not care for it either, so the infrastructure lagged behind. now, to change all tracks to allow optimal travel time, it would cost so much money that they just do not want to waste investing in it.
anyway, i saw a video once that explained it like this.

Very encompassing video! Thanks for the upload! Have made this trip a couple of times (both ways. while it is baffling that it still takes this long, if you have the time, it is quite enjoyable and a nice family/friends time. However, if you are pressed on time and travel for work, it is almost impossible to manage. If there could be investments in both scenic and fast train routes it would be amazing.

Here in ''the European Temple of trains'' are the stolen money from Romania! When Austria robs you and leaves you without resources, you cannot expect Romania to offer you the same conditions as in Vienna! I gave them everything and they don't want to pay anything to the Romanian state! It can't go on like this forever! Anyway, I don't know who you are but your video seems totally tendentious to me!

What a great trip on a Railjet style of CFR Sleeper train or specifically carriage. Reroute trip after border is amazing, outstanding scenery with Danube River, some countryside vibe and forest. Something interesting for me is when the train approaching Bucharest, there are plenty Double Deck Passenger coach along the track, I'm curious, is it still operating?

The train looks more like a normal regional train and the equipment is quite poor for an international train. The 2nd class seems much too cramped. The 1st class seats could be wider and more thickly padded. Can the seats be adjusted at all? Compartment cars with light switches and curtains/blinds are best -

Ive done part of this route. You were lucky the train was rerouted. The passport check is a problem for this route ironically caused by the Austrian government. I think RO gets Schengen in 24 which would make this route via Vienna more attractive. There are better trains leaving directly from Budapest

I'll visit Romania next summer and planned on taking the night train from Vienna to Bucharest, but was still a little nervous because I've never travelled via night train, especially not alone. So thank you for filming this, it was a delight to watch and calm my anxious butt a little

Awesome video, again!
I try to book this train for a trip in september, but it's quite difficult. Both the Romanian and the Hungarian bookings site.
Who can give me advice? Im travelling from Amsterdam. Booking the trip to Vienna is no problem

reply

I've taken that train several times in both directions, if you can afford the single compartment overnight it's wonderful. You can see from the views along the track how Romania is changing, there are more cars, fewer animals, modernity is arriving.
reply

It is very common today that stations and other places also express them selfes in an other language than their internal language. For example: english is lingunga franca and almost total understandable among worlds different native languages.
reply

I can't believe how small these trains have got since the 90's. Back then even local Romanian trains had 11-14 carriages.
I guess we really went overboard with our car purchases. Now everyone has at least one.

We are from South Carolina, USA, and will be taking the Dacia the other direction, from Brasov to Vienna, in a few weeks. As there is no longer a dining car, can you tell me (or show pictures) of the snack car?
reply

Really enjoyed it, thanks! For me sometimes your hands were moving a bit fast and would have enjoyed spending a few more seconds looking at areas, but that-s probably just me. Thank you for the awesome video!
reply

-Don't tell the US? - United States is currently a net exporter of oil. In addition we know the Romanian and Bulgarian oil fuels very well as we bombed them extensively during the second world war.
reply

You got -robbed- of 90 euros for a dusty and broken room - the night attendant saw you and took you for a fool. Besides that, I enjoy your content very much - happy travels and keep posting -
reply

12: 34 I think that the reason why the train was so slow was because the train was going through the Balota hill. The worst portion of track in the country. Or I think that-s Balota hill.
reply

i took the train last summer as well.
it was alright. the lacke of possibilities to buy anything to eat and drink, for such a long journey, is a big downside.

reply

Nice. I liked it. Your map is not quite right, the railway line reaches the bank of the Danube at Orsova, not at Moldova Noua, as your map shows: , but it's ok.
reply

You paid 90 eur for an upgrade to deluxe which was not actually a deluxe at all. Typical romanian swindlers. PS: Have they given you a bill. Just curious!
reply

CFR started to rebuild, on the first, the most used parts of railway and after, the whole its infrastucture. Thats why they rerouted you through Craiova.
reply

don t feel sad if the train was on this route as that part near the Danube River is also a charm to see it especially traveling by train. nice video trip
reply

I once was from Vienna to Oradea(romania) because the train was rerouted. I had a 7 hours delay because the train ran into a person near budapest.
reply

Hi simply railway may i inquire about wien Hbf is the platforms there free to access without a ticket or are there gates to prevent you from doing so
reply

the pleasure of traveling by train in Romania: it gives you the opportunity to see every detail around you, it has the same speed as a bicycle
reply

Wea are totally aware of oil in Rouania. During EEII, UASSF 15th Air Force and RAF 205 Group bombed Ploesti and barge traffic on the Danube.
reply

Tip: if you struggle with the staff in english, you can try using french! The two languages are similar enough to get the point across.
reply

5: 42 No - it was because -you- didn-t speak German! You-re in his country, and he doesn-t have to speak your random language. Sheesh.

I love the stark contrast between the ultramodern Austrian infrastructure, including Vienna Hbf, and the run down Romanian railways.

i was stationed at Budapest-Keleti during the initial months of the Ukranian refugee-situation and this train was always late -
