I'm about to watch this - but I see the map at the beginning. I used to take the traditional (mugunwha it think its called) train from Hayang (North part of Gyeongsan, an eastern suburb of Daegu) to Busan (2013-2016) (by the way, I now live near you in Overland Park) and could clearly see the construction of the line once past GyeongJu, and often wondered about that, why they were building it? (Korean infrastructure is dominated by the Seoul-Daejeon-Daegu-Busan axis. But I can see by this video that they have finally put it to use so am looking forward to watching this video.
It appears to me that they will probably extend that first north-south leg to Pohang which is an economically speaking, very important city as it contains a giant steel works that was the foundation for all of Korea's industrialization. (There is also a need for rapid connection from Pohang to Daegu.
Btw, Busan is the best city in South Korea. It's basically the least formal, most casual and most international city in Korea (I guess because of the port. It also has Korea's only beach and beach like town behind it. This is why I used to take the train from Hayang to Busan: a nice relaxing casual gettaway and see the ocean and not feel so outsiderish as a foreigner. Thanks for the video.

SRT is actually a result of the failed attempts in railway privatisation in Korea. The conservative government back then wanted to import the (horrendously failed) British franchising model, which naturally met with huge resistance. So they came up with SR as a compromise - which is partly owned by private parties while keeping Korail as a majority stakeholder.
They are supposed to -compete- with Korail, despite the fact that they lease most of their trainsets from Korail and the maintenance work is practically dumped onto Korail. They also don't run any local trains, which makes tons of losses for Korail yet vital for many rural communities. Not to mention that they have monopoly over the new high-speed line to Suseo, which serves affluent parts of Seoul where demand for high-speed rail is higher. That makes them 5% cheaper than Korail, and still perform better than Korail financially. Conservative parties seem to cite SR's case as the reason why railway privatisation is beneficial, saying you can get cheaper tickets and better service blah blah, but seems like they always forget to mention any of the context behind it.

Great trip. And yes another South Korea train trip report. Based on Wikipedia search: SR Corporation formerly known as Suseo High Speed Rail Corporation, and before official announcement by SR, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport used tentative term for this train service called Suseo High Speed Railway, and yeah SR Corporation HQ located in Suseo. Another fact is the other shareholders of this corporation are Teacher's Pension, Industrial Bank of Korea, and Korea Development Bank.

Great reporting. I'm sorry to say as someone who uses Finnish trains almost daily, this looks busted. Finnish 2 floor Intercity trains only travel at 220km/h (140mph) but the cheep ticket prices include fast internet, meals, all sockets, quiet areas for work, quiet singular seats, toilets for the handicapped, showers etc.

Since the SR trainsets are owned by Korail, there was a time when Korail operated them on the Jeolla and Honam routes before turning them over to SR.
I rode on them when going to Suncheon from Yongsan, and it was a unique sight seeing SR liveried trains with KTX Sancheon logos.

Hey SR! I see you are a fellow DJI OM 4 user! Do you have any tips on stopping the gimbal from swinging from side to side repeatedly? I keep having the issue unless I calibrate it, which I often forget to do! Great video on the SRT trains, they look great.

How strange that you can book a ticket on line unless your Korean, I booked a ticket from Hong Kong to Foshan China on line, they took my money with no problem, I picked the ticket up at the station in Hong Kong the day before my journey. I-m from the UK

Actually, Both SRT and KTX gives you some free snacks(nuts or something) and free bottle of water if you are a first class traveler. But they don't bring it to your seat. You must go and grab one at the vending machine between Car 3 and Car 4.

I saw that Korean rail operators use the French _TGV_ scheme and that's why I wonder if Korean manufacturers don't create a own model like Japanese _Kawasaki_ or _Hitachi_ which are used even in Italy or Spain.

I wonder if you'd accept my services to edit your subtitles. They could really benefit from the work of a professional editor (it shows that you just translate literally from French): /

Tbh Koreans are extremely xenophobic (been there twice) and this has been going on for ages, they're not going to change the ticket situation because they are racist. It's a deliberate thing.

Don you think you could purchase the ticket online with a vpn? Or you have to demonstrate you-re Korean with something like a social security number, an id number or something similar?

What an amazing service! I am wondering if you are being paid to travel internationally by Alstom to sell their products? I am happy if you are because Mother Earth needs more trains.

Oddly rundown and slightly dirty for a premier service, even though it is fast. Id take the current Acela Expressz, and certainly the upcoming Acelea Liberty for their better amenities

Not having dining/cafe cars is common for Asian HSR: you're supposed to bring your own packed/boxed meal or snacks (or eat at one of the station restaurants) before boarding.

Under normal circumstances, SR would have to be absorbed by Korail as soon as possible and at the same time return all the KTX-Sancheon borrowed from them!
