I have always felt trains should have cab/rear cameras and while i know there may be many that would agree i also think each car should have a camera(s) on each side so when you are looking out one side you can have your device looking out the other side threw a camera. The views are so stunning on a rip like this that looking out one side means you're missing something you'd want to see out the other side. It would also be cool to have access to railside cameras so you can see your train pass, and being some may be farther away you could get some scenic views.

Damn! I figured out when you showed the map of your trip that you were going to go through Mannheim and Lampertheim. I lived in a satellite village of Lampertheim called Lampertheim-Rosengarten and went through Lampertheim alot as a kid, so I was really hoping to see Lampertheim as you passed. It's too bad that you didn't get footage of it, but it's still very nice to see Germany from your perspective.
I watch your videos, vicariously, to remember Germany again and almost as motivation. Thank you so much for what you do, Simply Railway.

It's amazing to see you ride this train and route! I bought this train as a set for my model railway including the panorama coach and really want to ride it in person. Unfortunately, riding a train as a wheelchair user is not that simple. During your tour through the train I only spotted seats for disabled persons/ a spot for wheelchairs in the second class. Maybe one day I will get the chance to ride this train to Hamburg with my girlfried to see the Miniatur Wunderland and meet with some friends there. Thank you for the video! :)

Very beautiful video. My family and I traveled through Germany by rail in 1998. The trains were so punctual in those days that one could adjust times on their watches based on train arrival and departure times. German train journey is one of the best in the world, and seeing Rhine River brought back wonderful memories of 2 weeks of travel by train. Of course, the USA has a long way to go to make a train journey more enjoyable. Two weeks on Amtrak in 2015 was OK.

I arrived in Basel after a journey from Calais in 1948, bound for Lugano. The contrast after war ravaged France was startling, Switzerland was a pleasant shock, clean electric trains, as much food as you wanted, no rationing-. and Lugano- just perfect. If you have watched the Burt Lancaster film The Train, a lot of the stations in France were those we passed through.

Once I had the chance to take that panoramic car from Mainz to Cologne. It was just amazing. But I was pretty sure I had a reservation for that. I could pick the car I wanted to reserve in. I hope that SBB will keep them for very long. DB is suspending more and more old IC1 trains, which I think is a shame. Really like the (even without the panoramic car)
reply

-Simply Railway - What booking service did you use to book your tickets and reserve a seat in the Panoramic coach? Im looking at the DB booking system atm, and I cant seem to find a way to choose a coach, only forwards or backwards facing and window or isle? Does it show up if the coach is attached on the train only?
Great video, as always: )

you've made a few grammatical errors.
1. the plural is gentleMEN, not gentleMANS
2. the correct preposition for -. on the foothills of. - is ON, not IN (9: 32)
3. in this particular instance, the subject -are- should be placed at the very end (6: 11 -. how good looking these coaches ARE- instead of -. how good looking ARE these coaches-)

The most problem I see on the route from Basel to Karlsruhe is that this track is old. But it is one of the main connection from Italy/Switzerland to the direction north also Hamburg. And its nearly impossible to close this route to build it more modern with a high speed track. Its catastrophic if this route must been closed for days.
reply

This trip is terrible! way overcrouded trains and within 2 hours no toiletpaper on the train anywhere! Announcements are in german and sometimes when they feel like it in english. exept when there is a delay then its only in German! Huge delays that make you miss your next connection!

What baffles me when I ride in one of those panoramic waggons is how many people keep staring at their smartphones all the time. At least that was my experience the last two times. I mean. why get a seat in this kind of waggon, only to then not look out the windows.
reply

You mentioned in the video the coaches you saw just outside of Koblenz. The location you saw them is Koblenz Luetzel which is where the DB museum is located. The coaches in TEE livery are part of the collection their.
reply

These wagons you asked for can be parts of the TEE trains. When the IC-s came up, these wagons were the first class. They all have these windows -steamed- with gold for sun protecting ( and broadcast protecting too-)
reply

Ahhhh, the memories. Thank you for the wonderful journey through my homeland. I miss it and will never see my birth country again. So, it's nice to go along the journey once more even if it is only by video.
reply

The old cars at Koblenz are the german Intercity-Cars in old livery. They may be part of the Koblenz DB railway museum and they might be waiting for better times like other classic cars there.
reply

18: 09 the coaches belong to the DB museum in Koblenz. Well worth a visit if you are there for the next time! Lots of old locomotives (especially electric ones) and some coaches too.

40 euros for pasta, drink, pie and coffee? I get that its a train service, but it's too premium in my opinion. Them and airport food. I get that with 12 euros in a restaurant.
reply

Tbh apart from the panorama cars this train is very unimpressive compared to other trains used by SBB. I don't understand why they choose to use such outdated train sets on this route?
reply

Is it all of first class tickets that have that kind of observation car, or do you have to select one. And if so how do you know which car to pick when booking tickets?
reply

The cheapest way to go to the airport is to take the subway -E- express line, get off at the Sutphin Boulevard/Archer Avenue/JFK Airport. And then take the Airtrain
reply

Very nice trip report! But the routing you took from Zurich to Hamburg via Cologne is about roughly 1050 km or 652 miles which is a bit more than you stated.
reply

That line is beautiful. I still think the line between Prague and Dresden is just as beautiful if not better. I don't know why. Still, both are amazing -
reply

16: 32. many trains take this route intercity / eurocity every hour and as well plenty of regional trains from mainz to cologne several times per hour
reply

8: 46 that's not the border yet. You're still in Basel there. Basel is one of the very few points where Switzerland has territory north of the rhine.
reply

Would have preferred more scenery to just railway stations, as I have done most of this journey several times but decades ago.
reply

riding the train allows for person to person interaction and communication, meeting other cultures and points of view
reply

Sorry guy bad news for you you blur your video verry too often and that is not no way good for you videos can not be enjoyed
reply

Your not in Germany if you jus cross the Rhine at that point. There is still some Switzerland left to go.
reply

Class 101 is so successful even the US wanted some and now they-re the workhorse of New Jersey Transit
reply

Which app are you using to see the rail lines with max speed? Could you please share the Appstore link?
reply

The Rheingold express line through the Rhein valley besides the Lorelei Rock is a beautiful landscape.
reply

What app are you using at 12: 01? I was googling -Railmap- but couldn't find something that looks similar.
reply

From India, just wondering how are these trains viable with so few passengers. It is virtually running empty.
reply

Such panorama cars should be even standard! It would help to draw more people from motorways to railways.
reply

Thanks for sharing. I noticed that people were still wearing masks on the train. Is this a requirement?
