I spent Sunday running at PLS It was beautiful day for it. Trevor: I'm a 2nd Class Power Engineer (Steam Engineer) in Canada. A steam locomotive is basically a firetube boiler on wheels (as opposed to a watertube boiler. You mentioned superheated steam. Were there locomotives historically that used superheated steam? Wet steam is visible because it might only be 97% steam with suspended water droplets. Superheated steam, steam heated above and beyond its boiling point like any gas, is invisible. That's why it's so dangerous. You can get burnt from superheated steam when you don't see it. Do you use demineralised water or as least softened water? Historically, a lot of explosions happened because the scale built up in the boiler of the locomtive, causing all kinds of problems. You can make your boiler last a lot longer by using demineralised water and having a chemical treatment program for your water, but you probably all ready knew that. Thanks for this video I enjoyed it. :)

Ive spent some time around steam engines - never a locomotive, but stationary engines. I must say, theres something just magical about a device that takes simple and natural things that we see every day - water, fire, and relative pressure - and turns them into useful and controllable forces. One of these things coming to life almost has a living presence to it, as if theres a soul locked in there.

Ok that's it. Im building my own water tube boiler, and when the power is knocked out by a hurricane you will hear the hiss of steam and a 3 note train whistle from my back yard while you wonder how my house has power.

I'm thinking that 1. I'll have to pay these folks a visit, as their club is just over half an hour from my home, and 2. Riding a live steamer is likely the closest to riding a model train as we can get.

I stumbled upon a place that runs these up in the Berkeley hills about 25 years ago. I always wanted to go back and check it out but I have no idea if it's still there. Maybe I'll google it.
