Boston MBTA's hidden treasure is its streetcar line from Ashmont to Mattapan. Come take a look as we explore this line at a few different locations. This right of way was first used by the Dorchester and Milton, opening in 1847! It is still used today by the fleet of meticulously restored and cared for PCC streetcars owned by the MBTA. These cars are still used due to the significant age of some of the bridges on the line, such that modern light rail vehicles are too heavy to traverse the bridges

. so cool! I've lived in Toronto all my life (60+. Our last PCC streetcars ran in revenue service in 1995 - and wer finally replaced by the newer CLRVs and the articulated ALRVs. We have some 'relatively' high-speed dedicated right-of-ways in Toronto - mainly along the lakeshore. I will always remember the sound of the PCC cars. We had lots of different variations - and even bought 'used' ones from other cities when they discontinued their streetcar lines. Anyway, I hope Boston can keep 'em going for a while longer. By the way, we have ordered a number of Bombardier 'Flexity Outlook' articulated streetcars to replace the now-aging LRVs. Bombardier is really slow in delivering them. Toronto is also building a network of Light Rail (partial street operation and mostly underground.

I used to ride the Mattapan-Ashmont line and streetcars like this back in the early 1970's. I lived in Mattapan and went to Boston Technical High School in Roxbury so I did a round trip every day. This trolley line is the only one in the United States to run through a cemetery as it passes through the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Dorchester, MA.

That's interesting. They look like they might not weigh much more than a city bus.

I see you are doing a more -unique-kind of look for railraod history. Still waiting for some electric train action. like the TGV or maybe something in america. how about metro transit up at Minneapolis, St. Paul, Minnesota. I would be a good guide.

trams are vital. here in Toronto the system has actually expanded in the past 50 years. largest in western hemisphere. .cheaper and quicker to build than subways and light years ahead of buses. great video. love the -T- &love Boston!

Sure hope the T doesn't scrap the whole thing. I understand the cars are old, but ripping up the tracks for buses is totally asinine! Retire and replace the PCCs. The rest of the infrastructure is fine.

I'm always glad that there are PCC cars still around. I had fun watching the ones in San Francisco, but I think it would also be fun just to watch them in a rather quiet place like here.

I think that if they closed this line, rebuilt the bridges, put modern light rail cars on the line, and put in railroad crossing signals, then this would be great!

Cheap gas is not cheap. it is made to look cheap by abstracting the true costs to the environment find a renewable solution or go away.

What a great video! Beautiful shots! Is this line some kind of heritage railway like the F line in San Francisco or something?
