I genuinely hate the way the Chargers look.
Look, I get the Genesis is getting old, and Amtrak desperately needs to modernize, I don't fault them for phasing out new equipment. I mean, we already had to say goodbye to the F40PH, so it's only fair that it's replacement gets the same treatment. But god damn, the SC-44s literally look like the most generic European locomotive you could find.
It's like they heard all the people complaining about European passenger trains being more efficient, so they decided the solution was to just buy a bunch of European locomotives.
The reason Europe's passenger trains are so efficient, is because their railroads are specifically designed for passenger service, they don't have to deal with lines being backed up by priority freight trains, or distances measured in the thousands of miles between stops. Just buying new European locomotives won't magically solve the issue of ineffecient passenger trains.
If you don't modernize the lines and completely redesign the whole system, all those new engines are going to be is a horribly out of place looking BUS on the front of all your trains, which are still going to be restricted to exactly the same top speeds and timetables as they have been for 40 years.
I mean, god damn, where is the loyalty to American manufacturers? surely GE or even EMD could've come up with SOMETHING better than just, cloning generic German commuter locomotives.
At least have the decency to give them a different shell to LOOK more American, if they really were the best option, why not at least give them a different look to match the Superliner cars they're supposed to be pulling?
Are they not going to even _pretend_ that they aren't just blatantly copying European designs?

The Genesis is my all time favorite locomotive in the world. I can't believe it's already been so long since they started running. I wish they would put the new Charger locomotives in a Genesis body, that would be the perfect locomotive. The Genesis will surely be missed by a lot of rail fans. I am not a huge rail fan, I prefer aviation but for some reason in 2016 I started getting interested in trains and I have been watching video after video of trains and I started reading a lot about trains. In some weird way I became obsessed with locomotives, especially diesel electric locomotives. I guess I just love large transportation machines. Anyone else here interested in aviation also.

While i do love all trains including the genesis locomotives, they are my least favorite of all locomotives except for the heritage units and Via and Metro North engines, one reason is the paint scheme on most of them is very uninspiring, two they are showing their age and I'm ready for replacements, I'm not as disappointed with them being replaced as many others, honestly I'm a fan of Siemens and other European locomotive companies and love their designs, the Genesis served their time well on the rails, but now they've nearly reached the end of the line and its time for them to go to museums and tourist railroads, as usual, fantastic video!

The best locomotive that GE ever built in my opinion was the Genesis, orginally known as the Dash 8-40BP. I'll miss these locomotives. It's a shame I live in a town where our Amtrak train doesn't come until 1 or 3: 20 AM, depending on the day. Long-distance passenger rail is the most efficient form of land transportation ever developed, and in the USA we live in a country that absolutely despises it. The governments and their anti-railroad sentiment really disgusts me and makes my blood boil to 1, 001. But war packages.

It's sad an American company can't even build I knew passenger engine Siemens is a German company it's pretty repulsive who cares if they're built in this country I want them to be built by an American company but all of them are so corrupt and bankrupt literally the freight railroads are going to be lost soon if GE and caterpillar who now owns EMD go bankrupt both of those companies are extremely leveraged it's pretty repulsive to see what these banksters have done to our country

To further clarify about the GE P32AC-DM locomotives. Metro North operates them out of Grand Central (though not on the fully electrified New Haven Line) and Amtrak likewise between Penn Station and Albany due to restrictions on diesel exhaust in those underground Manhattan stations. As such, those lines will always require dual mode locomotives, with minor differences in their 3rd rail pickup gear to account for over vs under-running etc depending on the line.

There is one route where these trains are permitted to go 110 mph that I am aware of. It is the Pennsylvanian where they recently (as of two years ago) they were put in to replace the Dash-8s that were in use. Since that track between Philadelphia and Harrisburg is rated for 110 mph, it is able to go and achieve top speed. I am not aware of it going that fast anywhere else (maybe Empire?

GE should start designing EMU trains in order to compete against european manufscturers while also modernizing the degrading passenger fleet in the US. If they invest in more diesel electric trains and EMU trains there's a huge potential for the US to step up and compete against other countries in terms of railway technology.

Growing up on the Hudson line, I remember when these started showing up. We wanted an HO model of them so badly, but we never found any metro north versions. We thought the Genesis was so cool and futuristic looking! I-ll miss seeing those in the rails. Right now, I-d live to find a Metro North Genesis in O Scale.

Before the mid 2000s, the genesis locomotives were exclusively used on long distance trains with the exception of corridor trains in the midwest and northeast. Now the genesis locomotives are used on almost every Amtrak train with the exception of acela trains along the northeast corridor.
