How Mulan Goes to Battle Anatomy of a Scene

For the live-action film Mulan, putting together a sequence where an avalanche drives back an army was no big deal. It only required two years of preparation, multiple location scouts, intense horse training and a cast of more than 80 Mongolian and Kazakh trick riders. In other words, a cinch. Niki Caro, the director of the anticipated film (finally on a home screen near you via Disney+, worked tirelessly with a large team of crew and cast to pull off a sequence many will remember from the animated version. But the new scenes have some narrative updates. In this video, she discusses the moment when Mulan (played by Yifei Liu) comes into her own as a warrior and uses her smarts with an assist from nature to beat back an aggressive army. The key for me to creating and executing a sequence of this size, scale and complexity was the collaboration of some really singular women, Caro said. That collaboration included her cinematographer Mandy Walker, and one of her first assistant directors, Liz Tan. They found the right location, one with multiple levels to stage a battle, in the Ahuriri Valley, on the South Island of New Zealand. In managing all of the moving parts, like extras, stunts and the use of a trebuchet to fire a real flaming cannonball, Caro said it was like being the conductor of a really brilliant orchestra.

They weren't explicit regarding paying a premium price when you already paid for a subscription. Its not worth it. Especially with the social political issues of 2020 in America and China. Yeah, grew up watching TV and movies, even taking film classes in College and Uni but being ripped off by a company who supports greed, Communism and lack of diversity hires. I'm good with the 9. 99 subscription and can wait when its free. Sure, women empowerment is great until true backing of the real reason why this movie was made. Greed, lack of original content and oh, yeah don't forgot about Communism and suppression of minority groups in China, Falun Gong and other Buddhist groups.

There are thousands of Mulans fighting Tyranny in Hong Kong every day! The actress Liu Yifei is no Mulan, she is sided with CCP in suppressing the freedom and democratic movement in Hong Kong. She supports police brutality against young protesters, medic, journalists and prenant women in Hong Kong. Boycott this movie if you stand with humanity, freedom and democracy.
reply

Boycott Mulan I stand with Hong Kong.
Other Asian countries like Taiwan, Hong Kong and others are boycotting the Mulan movie because of the actors in the movie made a remark about supporting HK police and a few political takes.
Boycott Mulan!

Boycott this movie. Don t support a mega Corp that regularly subverts the law for their own greed and supports the oppressive regime in China whose terrible policies made it easier for the virus to jump to humans in the first place!

How can Liu Yifei be a U. S. citizen and enjoy the freedoms that the HK ppl are fighting for, while also supporting the CCP backed police oppressing them? #BoycottMulan

does mulan even have any asian talent BEHIND the camera? Cause I remember that most of the designers, screenwriters, and directors aren't even of asian descent.

So, disney won't have songs in this movie in order to have respect for the culture.
Yet, they cast Ariel as a black girl. Seems, kind, i dunno, hypocritical.

. so white director copies the cinematography of entire movie 'hero', directed by chinese director zhang yimou in 2002. sounds about right.

The actress isn't pro-police brutality, she is anti-violence. She just shared a picture about a man got beaten by protesters in HK Airport.
