Whats it like to encounter your new country for the first time? For some refugees to the United States, it means a night in the strange nowhere land of an airport hotel, as shown in Hotel U. S. A, this weeks new Op-Doc. Directed by Andrea Meller and Marisa Pearl, the film is a fascinating group portrait of families pausing to catch their breath on their way to new homes across the country.

Hear me out: the northeastern coastal areas like NYC are given to immigrants from countries like Nepal and a litany of African countries because of global economic inequality and environmental racism, the south is given to blacks as reparations, everything along the southern border from Texas to SoCal is given to Mexicans because apparently the drug war would not exist in their country if it wasn't for the USA existing or something like that, the Bay Area and everything north of it along the coastal west coast is given to Asians and Indians because #diversity, and the Midwest has this interestingly disproportionate amount of Middle Eastern and Somalian refugees. Racial diversity seen as necessary and inevitable, so let's just open up every border and by the way government fiscal responsibility doesn't exist because we can just print more money for immigrants who will also work for less and live in three generation living situations. Racial engineering at its finest.

This was beautiful, documenting the beginning of a long journey for these people. Let alone the journey, traveling itself can be hard when you've got the whole family and kids along with you.
One thing you can tell by this video is that these people are not spoiled. They take what life brings to them with gratitudehow could anyone blame them for anything? If anything we have much to learn from these brave people. I know this is from a year ago, but still prevalent in the discussion of immigration today.

The title to this video is very misleading. They arent refugees, these people are immigrants who went through all the paperwork in their respective country and after all that finally got the chance to move to USA seeking better life for themselves and their family. Though this was a nice video, I would like to see how real refugees from countries like Syria are treated when they first land in America.

I have a similar story, my family and I won the Greencard lottery so we were able to move here completely legally. my parents wanted to give me a better quality of life but the first year was quite challenging. we spent our first 2 weeks in a hotel and it was much like these people's experiences.

it would be smart to make them citizens get them jobs so they can contribute. this hotel is a good idea. why didnt they play cartoons for the kids. some organizations should work withthe hotel hhelp them find jobs and food and stuff for the kids to do

3: 26 TV says If you see something, say something letting them know immediately about the suspicious police state we live in and they are now on that list of suspicious people simply because they don't speak english. smh

There's a special place in my heart for people who help others especially in situations like this. At least they aren't alone I'm glad to see whole families make it together makes adjusting so much easier.

I personally know 2 refugees, one from Sri Lanka and one from Syria. Both men are very smart and extremely hard working. Sad to see how people are so closed minded sometimes.

I think more importantly you need someone or multiple translators that way we don't have a big disconnect and people looking confused.
