I'm obsessed with my 1950's life - hooked on the look

A VINTAGE-LOVER has spent $50, 000 transforming her 'fixer-upper' home into a 1950s timewarp. From an early age, Rochelle, 26, from Phoenix, Arizona, has been interested in all things retro. Some of her happiest childhood memories are of trawling the aisles of antique stores with her mother. And as an adult, her love of the past continued to grow. In 2018, she and her husband Matt bought their first home together. The property had been built in 1957, but remodelled in the 1970s. Rochelle then spent the next 18 months - and $50, 000 - restoring it to its original glory. Now, every appliance and piece of furniture in her home is vintage - as is her entire wardrobe. She concluded: I would say I'm obsessed with vintage. It might be a little crazy, but it's fun

This has been my life in this community/sub culture since the late 80's when in my mid teens. Completely normal to me. Most people do not understand you do not have to be a total luddite living every true element of an era to be into it. My husband and I love the aesthetics. 'Authentic' decor in home (with emphasis on things such as appliances complying to modern health, safety and compliance code. We have a modern 2 person infrared sauna and I love it, clothes, music, popular culture, cars etc. We have also been influenced by the times we have grown up and lived through. It's all fun and it's what makes you feel joy in living a certain way. The beauty is, we can pick and choose and leave the ugly side of the era out of our life. Live and let live and reserve what you think is your right to judge just because you don't get it and you think we don't fit in mainstream society how you think we should. Save us all from the conformists out there! And FYI, the global community of '50's lifestylers' is actually pretty substantial and diverse.

I live the Vintage lifestyle here in England UK, have done since my early teens, i drive a 58 Nash Metropolitan daily, a 58 Mercury Monterey and a 53 Matchless 500 Single. I have a vintage wardrobe also, so i know the fascination with all things vintage. Here in UK im classed as eccentric which isa little unfair. I must say i love your hair, youre home and Dodge, im so wishing i could find a woman like you here. I thought that was your young son, then you announced he was your husband, i was shocked, he is sure some lucky man

Racist for liking the 1950s, driving a 1950s car and living in a 1950s house? That-s ridiculous! I personally love the 1950s and think that the fashion, lifestyle, decor and cars are really cool. I also love 1950s music. Yes, I agree that the 1950s were not the best for minorities and women but I still find the historic era fascinating. Also, there are bad things and problems with the current era too. Always remember that.

Personally I move forward rather than back in time bc humans did change a lot physically. Women have become less curvy. So, to try to wear the style from days gone by may not look as good as it did then. Few can still fit into the type but that's very rare. One day humans will not be dictated on how to be a stereo type or else. Men still must wear a shirt and a tie? How silly.

My wardrobe is mostly vintage too. The main thing I struggle with is finding shoes but there-s a vintage clothes market near where I live that just makes it so easy. I-m now friends with a few of the stall holders and they always message me if they get something in they think I-ll like and put it aside for me.

Help me understand that logic, if you want to travel back in time that automatically means you support every immoral decision ever made during that time period?
Wouldn-t that mean everyone today supports every immoral decision of this time period?
What are the driving factors that in fact make them racist?

reply

-People automatically say I'm racist-. and the people calling her that say it's everyone else who's ignorant. I guess racist can substitute any adjective today. Such a lazy, thoughtless way to acuse someone that makes you uncomfortable even if you can't even articulate why.

I love the brass armadillo. Well the one out near Kansas City, They always have something cool there. Huge place. Nice people too. I love that she loves what she does. That's all that really truly matters. Go on -flip your lid- girly. -

You are not alone in this. My neighbor is just like you. I enjoy her dresses and perfect hair tho. Very beautiful to see. But in UK you will see many old ladies with perfect hair and vintage clothes like they are stuck in the past.

My problem is that all this is extremely expensive. You can live in whichever era you wish to. if you have the money. it will just not happen with what we have now. You know what I mean and it-s not enough to live it only mentally.

It's strange to talk about racism somehow. I love the era of the 60s, although then women did not have as many rights and freedoms as they do now. But this love does not mean that I want to become a housewife, for example
reply

Love this. A couple of things I would redo is the wheels on your car. They are too modern. and although I like colored hair, its a bit off of the 1950s style. but its nice and makes you pop out of the crowd even more: )

She-s so very pretty. I love her style and personality. I have always been in love with the way ladies wore their hair back then. I recently got some vintage pieces. This is my favorite fashion era.

I just love her attire and her beautiful home, especially the Tiki Room. She seems to have really studied 50's interior design; the furniture and decor come together so harmoniously in their home.
reply

Just because you love 1950 does not mean you-re racist you just like the style and is okay I love 1950 too and that don-t make me racist I didn-t know people can hate you for liking a style
reply

It-s nothing to do with race but everything to do with style - if we lived in a decent era for clothes people wouldn-t be looking for inspiration elsewhere. Modern -fashion- is dire.
reply

Not everyone was racist in the 1950s. I live in Washington state, and up here even in the 1950s segregation wasn't popular in Washington. In fact, it mostly was a southern thing.
reply

its sad how people think someone-s racist just because they-re drawn to a specific era and time period. i don-t blame her, the 1950s style is absolutely adorable and fun.
reply

I love her hairstyle. She looks amazing and her car is so nice. I always said to my mom I want my first car to be vintage too because old cars just look so well crafted.
reply

My dad has a 1956 Lincoln premiere I absolutely amazing and a rare site in Europe so im a lucky guy something about the mid century modern In America is so cool
reply

I love the clothes of that time they look so pretty and girls look graceful in them and they are comfortable too its really hard to find pretty clothes nowadays
reply

How does one make the claim that if someone is obsessed with the 1950s, they are racist? Society is getting dumber and more low comprehension by the minute.
reply

if I had the money I will totally buy vintage items. I also love aesthetic things like in 80s or 90s anime set up. I would love to be born early than 1996 ---
reply

That-s the most intelligent hate they can come up with is calling you a racist? I never met anyone call someone a racist that was not a racist b
reply

Racist? how the f%$k can anyone say you are racist by living in an era. I'm so sick of these people! I hope you told them to pound sand!
reply

the 50s 40s 30s were the best times for music and fashion unlike now back then you needed to have a good voice to make a record
reply

I applaud her for living authentically. She looks so happy! I would never say she's racist. She's sweet and cute as a button!
reply

I love Vintage but to live it out as my daily existence, that takes courage, money & Passion 2 the XTREME! Love it! -
reply

The main thing she's missing is the asbestos, formaldehyde, lead and other toxic materials commonly found in 50s homes
reply

We need to be friends! I am not a newbie to the music or the authentic, but I am new to making my life all about this
