Thanks, but still don't understand when definitely I would use one but not another.
In the example with soup, we used ppc only because we had a note that the process was continued for 20 minutes?
What exactly would happen I was using past cont?
For example: I was cooking soup for 20 minutes when the phone rang. 'cooking' is a progressive action, that happened in the past at the precise moment(phone rang)
When exactly I should use ppc and not pc?
Help!! Why God has created so mush very similar tenses in English))?

Hello BBC Learning English, Can we use Since and For with past continuous tense?
I was studying English for 2 hours last night.
I was waiting for you for 2 hours before I left.
And is the previous sentence has the same meanig with: I waited for you for 2 hours before I left.

I think that we have to use a comma before the coordinating conjunction so
