Attenborough: Venus Fly Trap BBC Earth
video description
And one little correction of Sir David (never imagined that would be possible):
Touching one hair inside the trap wont trigger it. The insect needs to touch two hairs within a period of a few seconds to trigger it. The reason is that the biomechanics use a lot of energy from the plant so it needs to ensure that the insect is fresh. In other words, you cannot hand feed a Venus fly trap a dead insect like you can with the other carnivorous plants.
Edit: Its also not just water in the pitcher plants. All the carnivorous plants use an enzyme liquid to dissolve the insects so the plant can absorb the nutrients.

What's amazing is that the Venus fly trap is only found in nature in a relatively tiny patch of subtropical wetlands in North and South Carolina. I would have expected the most bad-ass plant would come from Africa or Australia. They have all the crazy stuff. A tiny octopus that can kill you with venom. A spitting cobra which is obvious. But the Venus fly trap? Southern United States lol.

I like how these are a novelty to most people. There are pitcher plants and sun dews growing in the woods right behind my house.
