BBC, get your facts straight. Slaughtering of cow for consumption is legal in atleast eight states or union territories in India. North-West of India does not represent the whole nation. Going back just seventy years in history will reveal that meat from cow was consumed by the hindus in most states, except the upper brahmin cast who follow vegetarianism. This fervor about cow being a sacred animal in Hinduism is a creation of one particular religious organisation that is intend on uniting hindu majority of India behind them and rule the country. They take up topics like slaughtering of cows, building ram mandir where Babri masjid once stood (which was demolished by a crowd of violent people from the same extremist organisation, allowing women to enter temple etc. However, even after ruling the country for last five years with an absolute majority in parliament, they have done nothing to resolve these issues through legislation. Keeping these issues alive forever is their intend as there is no other subject like these exists that will mobilize hindus behind this party.

Would not the increase of leather also increase the countrys ability to sustain itself? There are countless slums and people who are starving every day in those slums of India. I know its against their religion, because of their god Vishnu, (trust me, you dont want to know) but, if you were literally starving to death. it is a hard choice to make. I want to help those living in poverty, in my country as well as others who are in need.

Flesh-based leather is terrible for humans, terrible for the planet, and especially terrible for the animals who are killed for it. There are so many ethical alternatives to flesh-based leather. I hope we can one day become a non-violent society that treats sentient beings with respect.

Dont say Compassion for animals, its only for cows. You see these cows as your gods. I dont see a chicken being rescued in your place.
Peoples lives and families are getting destroyed every day in India for your so called gods. Shame

I love how liberals use religion liberally when addressing their agenda of animal rights. How come BBC wont make a video in USA in the heartland farms and have an animal rights activist say she is appalled by the slaughter of cows?
reply

Odd piece. Cows are just another species. Other animals grown for food are also increasingly treated badly in India, with animal rights and hygiene standards unenforced. Stop making cows a political issue.

Pakistan is a major leather processing location. More fuel for conflict: -O
Maybe the Indians should invest into the best synthetic leather possible and brand it as ethical leather.

Because they give milk freely. Yes because its not at all like you have to forcibly impregnate a cow and take he baby away so you greedy human can drink their milk. IM ROLLING MY EYES!
reply

There's only politics in the name of cow. In North eastern states, it is perfectly okay to have beef, but not in central & western provinces.
Hypocrisy all round.
