Social Influence: Crash Course Psychology #38 user: The remaining 1/3 in Milgrims experiment may have resisted the coercion WITHIN the experiment, but put them in the real world, invent a 'noble purpose', reward them with money, power, authority, throw in some special conditioning/training and 'team spirit', dehumanize the victim, and add on some penalties for those who dare to dissent - the result is almost total conformity. Its not just the military and police that are subject to this system - its doctors, scientists, historians, academics of all sorts, politicians, the media, etc etc. Principles of ethics and truth are routinely compromised by the need to conform and the fear of being rejected. The top 1% depend on it, and now we are going to pay for it - we are so screwed.

One cool thing about learning about these phenomenon is it empowers us to recognize it and do better. My social psych teacher at NYU told us that, during a replication of the Milgram experiment, there was a subject who refused to give the socks because -I just got back from Vietnam, I know where this is going-. (I know, I know, case study and the plural of anecdote is not data, but) knowing how authority uses escalation to make us do things we normally wouldn't can make it at least harder for them to succeed in manipulating us, if we watch out for it -_-

The rookie cops who helped Chauvin kill George Floyd fall into this. according to a report by ABC7 in LA.
-During the arrest, as Chauvin held Floyd down with his knee, Lane asked Chauvin twice whether they should roll Floyd over.
-No, staying put where we got him, - Chauvin replied,
-I am worried about excited delirium or whatever, - Lane said. And Chauvin replied again, -That's why we have him on his stomach. -
Many people would simply follow -authority-. especially if their job depends on it.

groupthink (lack of individual thought) is the Hallmark of PC culture. PC is self-perpetuating because it forbids solution to the problems it creates, as the solution required would be politically incorrect. PC is a genius ideology that will eventually destroy us and can be blamed on automatic mimicry and normative social influence.

I remembered in Xmen First Class that stuck with me since was when Magneto was punishing the soldiers, and Xavier told him that they were -just men following orders-. And then Magneto said, -I have been under the mercy of men just following orders my entire life. Never again-. Powerful scene.

I believe that a Milgram-experiment-like test is used to evaluate potential math instructors at my university. They have to reach the maximum shock level to get hired.
