Moon Phases: Crash Course Astronomy #4

In this episode of Crash Course Astronomy, Phil takes you through the cause and name of the Moon's phases Vance: I wonder what a spinning moon's effect would have been before it became tidally locked with one side always facing the earth. Is there a way to tell how fast it could have been rotating in it's history by looking at very ancient impacts beneath all of the more recent craters?
The reason why I ask, is that the rotating moon may have caused a longer duration to the heavy bombardment, if rocks hitting the moon got kicked up into earth's orbit to impact later that year or even next year when the earth travels through that region of relativistic moving space rocks that could just be 'sitting there' until the earth runs into it.

Wait wait wait. When you say we who is we and what is the location said we are at? We get the moonlight from the sunlight reflecting off it. You say we see the full moon when moon earth and sun are in alignment. How does that happen if all three are aligned? wouldnt the earth be blocking the sunlight to the moon? Therefore no light reflecting off the moon because of earths alignment between the two? That's why my first question was who and where are we located looking at this in the sky?

Dearest Mr. Plait -- In betwixt battles, and in the evenings, I have with some habit turned my spyglass toward our moon and allowed my mind to formulate many questions. This day, and to your honorable credit, many such questions have now been answered! -- Andrew

Love this video! I have a question though, considering both the moon and the earth are rotating and on top of that the earth is also revolving - how do I keep track of where to find the moon on the sky in each different phase, moth, etc.

If it were true that moonlight is purely a reflection of sunlight, then a moonlit earth surface would be warmer than moon shadow, but moonlight is cooler than moon shadow.
Heliocentrism is pseudoscience religious idiocy.

I don't of its just my mind, but Moon is also seen at the east side first right? Like Sun? If someone can please explain why from the past two days I am seeing it at West at around 6. 00 pm IST?

Hi there! I have a question - Why do we see the moon in the mornings during some parts of the year? I remember I could still see the moon even though is was 10 am?
