video description

Rating: 4.0; Vote: 1
Today we-re turning our sociological eye to another major social institution: religion. We-ll use symbolic interactionism to help us understand the dichotomy of the Sacred vs. the Profane. We-ll compare the perspectives of structural functionalists and conflict theorists on whether religion improves social cohesiveness or increases social stratification. We-ll also explore how religious practice in the US differs across race and class lines. Crash Course is made with Adobe Creative Cloud. Get a free trial here

I can see the higher dislike count.
The thing is, me, as a person without one, and mild religious people can discuss religion from a point of view that is unconcerned with its truth.
People that are very religious won't think about religion as anything other than -I am right, you are wrong-, because that way of thinking is sacred to them.
You're already breaking the sanctity of religion simply by talking about it from a perspective that is beyond -this is the truth. -
Also, Judaism is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more complicated. In the macro scale you're not wrong but that religion has so many rules. You wouldn't believe just how many. The more of them you know, the more preoccupied you are.

When the Spanish colonized the Philippines, they spread the myth of the Mananangal, a mythical monster, in order to deter people from going out at night. Its possible that religion was just mde up because they come with a set of laws that keep us in check. If anyone wants to challenge this, I point to Plato's the allegory of the cave.

Correction: Eve didn't sin because she 'tempted' Adam. Eve sinned because she ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil which was the one thing that God told them not to do. Both acted on their own will. Both are equally colupable. You need a different example.

I would say religion is a social construct based upon societal norms, to further drive home the need to behave a certain way to get a society to be cohesive and not disruptive. Common sense lead to the birth of religion as a tool to instill these values in people.

Unfortunately, the interpretation of the Christian world view wasn't very well done. But I know she was just explaining Marx's view. Loads of misinterpretational views on Religion at that time, aye? I guess that's why it's still called a theory.

You know considering there is a huge number of people not living in US, you could have used world wide references rather than just American references. It was a great start to the video which ended on a bit confusing note.

God is an androgynous plurality in genisis. That example used at 5: 59 is an error. Get a biblical scholar in. The assumption that we understand ancient religious texts lead us to this reductive simplicity. It's niave.

Religions are created by men - especially by the human brain.
God does not exist outside of our brains.
It only exists inside our brains.
People who believe in religion are offending SCIENCE!

Sociologists are fine if you want to look at social and cultural effects of religion, but if you want to study religion itself, you must turn to theologians and philosophers.

1: 54 --- -Muslims -supplicating themselves- -? Really? Maybe -prostrating- (note the second -R- please) maybe -suffocating- --- but it all sounds so onanistic!
