One thing struck me: Zheng He, a Chinese Sailor with larger ship, sailed about exploring the coast of Africa and Asia earlier that the European sailors respecting the culture and the present set up of government existing in those places. The Chinese did not come to colonize. The European sailors, with smaller ship, came about rampaging at places they set their feet on, colonizing the places, enslaving the inhabitants, etc. I am just wondering if the knowledge they have in relation to science and technology is enough for them to become emboldened and daring. Science is a tool to widen the empires. The focus on plants, animals amazed me and the subsequent spread of diseases, saddened me opening my mind regarding to future- (1) spread of diseases in our modern world as mobility of both animals and plants is quite fast. (2) use of Science and technology as tools to subdue other cultures and nations.

A few points:
1. It is NOT correct to claim that Europeans enslaved Africans taken to the Americas. Those Africans were made slaves IN Africa, enslavement is the process of making someone a slave which Europeans had generally avoided, in Europe since the High Middle Ages and against non-Christians by the Renaissance.
2. Claiming that the Integration of the Americas into the Spanish Empire is -genocide- is not accurate - Disease was not intentionally used against Native populations and the vast majority of the violence committed in the 16th century was perpetrated by Natives against Natives under European influence.
3. Claiming that it's a good thing that Europeans began to question the naturalness of their way of life implies that conclusion to be incorrect when such a claim could not be substantiated either way.

The Columbian Exchange refers to the exchange of diseases, ideas, foods, plants, and population between the new world and the old world that the world has ever discover. At the age of Exploration, it was a period from the early 15th century and continuing into the early 17th century, during the European ships were traveled around the world to search for the new trading routes. Among the famous travelers of this period were Christopher Columbus, Vasco da Gama, Pedro Alvarez Cabral, John Cabat, Juan Ponce de Leon and Ferdinand Magellan. As l know Ferdinand Magellan came to the Philippines on March 16, 152l at the Homonhon lsland in the Philippines.

Loved the episode but I wish you had talked about the development of new ship types in Europe that lead to the age of exploration. The development of the caravel is an interesting story of technology spread and the Nau and Galleon are probably the first examples of state sponsored engineering projects focused on developing new vehicles, not infrastucture, in Europe. I think it's an important example of how science and technology became really linked in actual research projects that are similar to the ones we see today in the development of new vehicles like ships, planes and cars.

Why is a European conquering an area of America any worse than a non-European conquering that same area? For example The Aztecs and Incans were blood thirsty imperialists but that is not how they are portrayed. The whole history of the Americans is one of waves of settlement - anyone who knows anything of human nature -will know how peaceful those would be. Yet for some reason the penultimate owners are the 'first nations' - what nonsense!

I think the description of the disease impact in native american population is missleading: The adaptive immune system adapts thoughout the life of a person, but the immunity that failed for the natives was likelly, mostly, the innate immune system, which was not evolutionarily adapted to the diseases that the Europeans were selected against for centuries, through their intimate relation with farmed animals.

i have to admire how 500 spanish men went into an unknown continent and conquered an empire of 5 millions. i don't care how many people died, how they used the native peoples against each other, how they lied and betrayed their allies. if Jamie Lannister did what Cortez did you'd have him tattoed on your arm. admit it millenials

Perhaps, the subtropical and riverine states--around Nile, Euphrates, Tigris, Yangtze, Ganges, etc--were used to the abundance of necessities like water, food, plants, and animals. Whereas Europeans had a protectionist outlook towards their newfound territories.

-England- seems to include Scotland on your map around 5: 40. You'd have an argument for Wales, but until 1707 Scotland was only in a union in the monarch and certain couldnt' be described as -England-
