While the English were falling apart a little, with their civil war and their restoration and their succession problems, the Dutch were getting their act together. They were throwing off the yoke of the Spanish Empire, uniting their provinces, and building out their global trade network. Today, we'll learn about how the Dutch came to their Golden Age, and how it ended

American historians are uncovering more and more about the role of the Dutch in early American history. One notable thing are the parallels between the American declaration of independence and the Dutch act of abjuration 2 centuries earlier. Fun fact: The Netherlands by one of its ships in the Caribbean was the first to salute a vessel with an American flag and thus recognize the US as an independent country.
The Netherlands as a relative safe haven for all kinds of people became Europe's first true melting pot. This got then transplanted to North America through the colony of New Amsterdam which then became the seed for the North American melting pot.

You mentioned that we liked orange so much:
Fun fact! Carrots are orange because Dutch growers wanted to honour William of Orange. He is considered the 'father of the fatherland' and our national anthem is also named after him
I love this series, but wished you would have gotten more into depth about slavery/ the consequences of colonialism, it is one of the huge questions we have to deal with nowadays

The thing about global economy being a expandable pie is correct but only in long terms. In short term as in a few years or a decade or 2, it definitely is fix. And how many company can have such a long term plan. I don't think even mega corporations like nowadays can do that. And economic advantages can turn into military or political very quick. So it not so crazy to think that people will go to war over it.

England/ English is not interchangeable with Britain/ Great Britain/ British. I really hope you used these terms deliberately in the script? I know that the English did spearhead and drive a lot of British history, but usually on an international scale, Britain acts as one rather than as England. The distinction is important for when England is acting alone or as Britain.
Sincerely,
A Brit

It was Not the provinces who disagreed about war. It was the stadhouder was the leader of the army so he wanted war because it gave him more power. The raadspensionaris( usually from a rich family) didnt want war because he wanted more power and they wanted to improve the trade. These 2 people where the most powerfull man in the netherlands at the time and they Prety much hated eachother.

Really interesting episode. Pivotal to modern European and American history: Treaty of Westphalia ('negotiations' invented) and Treaty of Breda (Dutch just handed over what would become NY, NJ, PA and DE) For a small nation, the Dutch have always 'punched above their weight' (like the Irish. Pity though that the name isn't more inspiring than 'the low countries'. I prefer 'Holland'

The wealth of dutch was mainly from VOC. VOC was profiting without production. Their infamous missions were 3Gs: gold, glory, gospel. Basically it exploiting colonies, such as my lovely country indonesia. Shame on you netherlands. How many indonesian people that you've been killed and tortured? We have forgive but NEVER forget.

Hmmm. A parliamentary form of government aimed at uniting provinces with differing interests who bicker about the distribution of power between central executive authority and local governance? Not to mention is overall more united in its economic policy than its political authority? Now where have I seen this before.

The dutch republic of johan de witt is the very first democratic experiment in modern history. Also with the bank of amsterdam and finances. Spinoza was the intellectual of this experiment with his aim for democracy, he really sounds contemporary. Holland was the richest country in the world between 1600-1800.

I appreciate the effort but not all facts are well described or completely wrong in this video. Europe's history is complex and is debated within the countries itself. I'd suggest perhaps making a longer video and try and become more accurate on certain events or topics.
