Like its name suggests, the brown dog tick dines on dog blood. But as temperatures rise, they're more likely to feast on you, too. That's a problem, because the brown dog tick is a vector for Rocky Mountain spotted fever, a disease that's deadly to both dogs and humans. Brown dog ticks are the most widespread ticks in the world, and the most adapted to living among us. Scientists believe they evolved alongside burrowing carnivores like foxes and weasels, and came indoors when we domesticated dogs. That's a problem, because they can transmit bacteria that cause Rocky Mountain spotted fever, a terrible disease that can kill both dogs and humans. Rocky Mountain spotted fever usually occurs in small clusters in the United States and is relatively rare. However, outbreaks in northern Mexico have killed hundreds of people. And rising temperatures due to climate change are sparking some troubling tick behavior. When it s particularly hot out, brown dog ticks start craving human blood!

Took my
Puppy out side in the 2nd day, came in and saw something on his head, looked, thought it was dirt, brushed it off, next it was on my hand but instinctively I brushed it off and tried to vacuum, was in the bathroom and my corgi was with me and I saw it again on his head, flushed it

Here's my guess on why ticks prefer humans when it gets hot: humans sweat. Im guessing the ticks want to stay cool in the heat and they exploit how humans sweat to help keep their body temp down.
But who really knows.

I would have appreciated if you did not have a singleminded focos on America. A quick comment on how prevalent they, or cousins to them, are in other parts of the world would have been appreciated.

Around my area, we used to mostly only see Lyme disease in the dogs. Now, lots of them get infected with Anaplasma and even Eherlichia. It's scary seeing the trend over the years.

Noticed the dog ticks coming for me from all directions on a picnic this summer, temps were just under a hundred
Not used to ticks marching toward me from a visible distance

I didn't see much of a difference between the different types of ticks cuz well, they're ticks. blood suckers. pests. mother earth, be gone with them!

I wonder if the dogtocks prefer humans during hot weather because we are better at thermoregulation. Nobody wants to get burned by their meal after all.

Let's just hope this nasty critters won't landed down under. We have too many tick cases in our vet hospital, and it's been non stop!

Maybe we're cooler than dogs' bodies are so our blood would be cooler overall as well when it gets too hot out for them? Great video!

You think there are ticks that sit on the tick? And even smaller ticks that sit on the tick that sits on the tick and so on?
