I got stung fairly recently, and perhaps it was the spot at which I was stung, but, man, it hurt.
I went hiking and had some dog treats in my jacket pocket. A few yellow jackets found me and I threw the treats down for them, hoping that would please them. Thanks to this video, I knew they wanted meat for their babies, and these were all-meat treats. I clearly smelled like meat, still, because a few of them wouldn't leave me alone even after I walked a long ways away. I stood very still since I was just watching my dog play in the river, hoping they would eventually realize I didn't have anything and leave, but one stung me on the inner thigh, like right where the leg meets the hip. Right outta nowhere and in a real sensitive spot! Another one stung me in the exact same spot about a half-inch lower and I was like, sorry, pup, we gotta get outta here now, not knowing if they give off a scent or signal to attack like certain bees. And so we hightailed it to the car where they were _still_ following me. That sting site hurt for almost 2 full days.
I can't blame a creature for doing what it's gotta do, but it wasn't a very nice birthday present. Lesson certainly learned.

Once, when I was in the Boy Scouts, I had walked down into a ravine full of waist high bushes. Almost immediately, I began to feel stings on my legs. I was wearing shorts and thought I had walked into a patch of nettles or something.
Of course, I hadnt.
I looked down and, to my horror, saw a bunch yellowjackets all over my legs. I remember seeing these evil little things biting and stinging at the same time, busily cutting right through my skin with their jaws. It took me a moment to make sense of it, then I ran back up the hill, shouting and swatting at them.
When I had gotten them all off, and had gotten far enough away, I saw that I had at least 8 bites. Two of the bites were little round holes about 1/8 across where the yellowjackets had made off with a little patch of skin. Not sure how many stings there were because they dont leave their stingers and they were just jabbing away at the same spots while they were biting.
Now I always wear long pants while hiking, but Im not particularly concerned about bees, wasps, and hornets.

There was a colony of yellow jackets at one place I lived and didn't realize they weren't bees, I got very close to the entrance and spent a while watching and they never even came to investigate me. It's wonderful to hear that they're scavengers since that's such an important role!
I also was at an outdoor brunch place and was shocked to find bees LOVED crab meat, so I helped them out by breaking off little pieces, and some deal, never once felt threatened by them. I know they're some of the more painful stings out there (props to the person who let themselves get stung) but they seem a lot less concerned by humans than other wasps so I'm happy to let them live

In East Asia I would often find small hornet species (Vespa bicolor/velutina) instead of Yellowjackets being the little menaces looking for sugar and meat instead. They would even be curious and land on people, though not in a threatening sense. Sometimes I just share the food and calmly watch them, plus they make super cool subjects for camera close up shots.

Loved your video Laura, I was wondering if you have any info on whether or not these guys eat live meat like mosquitoes flys Nats or other pesky biting insects? I know hornets love to eat flys and wasps like to eat mosquitoes and the carpenter bee loves to eat Nats, but don't know much about the yellow jacket. Thanks, jp from Indiana

I'll just let them eat off of me. What do I need my sweat for? I'll tell you. 30% of honey that you get in a bottle is from your armpits. I don't know about you, but bugs chewing on my crotch and armpits doesn't sit well. I found a dead cat in my yard that was covered in wasps, flies, and ants. I nearly puke when I think about it.

Once at a BBQ. 2 full grown men watched a wasp slice dice and helicopter off a chunk primo cut, freshly rested.
We went from knodding and smiling yes to cheering, Biblically. As the little one went up and down hoisting itself up several times due to the sizeable chonky piece of grub it had collected.
I Cherish that moment.

What an amazing timing for this video to pop up.
A few days ago I was having breakfast outside and one of these little guys spotted my food. After deciding that the egg wasn't for her, she proceeded to a slice of ham and proceeded to cut a chunk off and airlift it away.
It was the cutest thing I've seen recently.

We always had a plate with rest meat and bones and whatever on the other end of the table so the yellowjackets would leave us alone. and it worked like charm! plus seeing them chew off a meatball thats slightly to big too take off with so they had to do this little run up before they could fly. Hilarious!

They are basically a giant fly who can sting without dying. they do pollinate and allat but still poison our food from whatever dead carcass they walked on before landing on the big mac. Thanks for your service but if i see u around my meal, im treating u just like a fly. with a stinger

The thing that bugs me about yellow jackets is they're more closely related to what we call Hornets than most other types of Wasp. Compare them to the Giant Asian Hornet, or the Bald Face Hornet, then compare them to say a Paper Wasp. Also, yes I know hornets are technically big Wasp.

anyone into gardening should know the value of wasps, generally leave them alone and you wont have problems with them but if their nests are in the way what has to be done has to be done, also paper wasps seem to have a thing for coffee

I see them all the time on the wooden cage my bunny runs around in, I don't mind them, I see them chewing on the wood, they be building their nests, I respect that. It just irritates me when they get too close to us or my bun.

I kept having a yellow jacket try to eat the meat pie as I was taking a bite, and fly around my head, so I had to kill it with a box cutter. Dont mess with a picnicking giant with a guillotine sized shank >: (

A quick way to remember the difference between wasps, hornets, and yellowjackets Wasps build bare comb nests, hornets build enclosed nests above ground, and yellowjackets build enclosed nests underground.

Yellow Jackets arent to bad. Wasps are just flying ants. Bees wasps and ants are so necessary for our ecosystem. They are also examples of great teamwork. If only humans could learn to work together more.

Last resort my. I believe it to be true for nearly any species but this one. Especially in the fall when they are stressed and starting to die, they are just aggressive without any provocation.

So fun fact, honey bees aren't native to North America. They're an invasive species here. We brought them here from Europe. Wasps and other flying hymenopterans are the original pollinators of NA.

Yellow jackets use self defense as a weapon of aggression.
They will violently defend your food from you when they decide to crash your picnic

I just killed a whole nest that housed about 85-110 of these yellow beasts. Had to wait till night because they are not active at night.
