Backswimmer Insects Drag Prey Into the Upside Down

They look like little rowboats, cruising belly up below the surface of a pond or gentle stream. But don't be fooled. Backswimmers are voracious predators, and when it's time to find a new home they know how to make a dramatic exit. We get these little aholes every spring when we first open the pool, and I absolutely hate them. Until the shock/chlorine makes them leave or kills them off than any body part that touches the water is almost instantly stung/bitten and they are actually kinda painful, similar to a honeybee sting.

and Grounded made this a passive creature. to be fair to Obsidian, those water boatmen are everywhere and the diving bell spiders and water fleas (why aren't they passive) are bad enough (how did that pond just turn into a coral reef for bugs, I swear they don't clean it up enough

I love the idea of a horror game with insects, these would be terrifying. I imagine your character (maybe an aphid or a small beetle) falling into water and having to swim out, trying to escape being dragged under the pond by these bugs.

I would love to see a video on Toxorhynchites, aka Elephant Mosquito aka Mosquito Eater! They do not consume blood, their larvae does consume other mosquitos larva, and the adults are often beautifully metallic in appearance!

As soon as she said swimming pools that reminded me of my childhood memories as a curious kid to now an adult. I finally know what they are 20 yrs later lol (As they say you learn something new everyday) thank you for sharing

I got bitten by one of these before. It hurts like heck! They were swimming in my grandma's pool and the first thing i think is that I'm going to try and catch it.
Very bad idea to try and catch true bugs.

Theres a very similar bug that swims upright in the water, called the water boatman. Oh, and pro tip: Dont hold them in your hand. They bite (and 10 year old me would nod in agreement)

there was one summer where we got these in our pool and i hated them, i wanted to catch them and throw then out but like the video said as soon as they saw a shadow they'd swim off

Why does America feel the need to change the name of everything. These are called water boatmen in Britain. She even said that's what they look like. but no. change the name.

I like to imagine these guys as guardians of a portal to an alternate universe, protecting the lake from invaders trying to enter the lake to an alternate dimension

The first time I caught one resulted in a painful welt. I thought it was a bite at the time, like a horsefly, but now I know it was their mouth harpoon!

This is what i first thought the water flea in Grounded was.
TBH is these guys and Giant Water Bugs where added the Kou pond would be a NO-GO.

I got 2 of these in my pool one time, they were super hard to catch and I never could find what they were, theyre really cool now that I know!

Just imagine being injected a substance that liquifies your innards, and then being turned into an empty shell. Horrifying.

I found this in my pool and ran for my life is this small pool while its following me while Im screaming it was funny but terrifying

Caught on of these in a swimming pool when I was a kid. It has a painful bite! But Im a fan of anything that eats mosquito larvae!

I still cant get over the fact that ponds are basically just giant natural cups of tea and thats why they are brown
reply

I like their little swimmy paddle feet, I think they're cute. And as an added bonus they eat the mosquitoes, my hero!

One time a backswimmer got into my camper and it kept trying to get into the pet water bowl and I was terrified of it
reply

As cool as backswimmers look, they have a nasty bite. Theyre also called the water boatman or the diving beetle
reply

Cool creatures. You really know how to make us sit on the edge of our chairs and hide our faces in our hands
reply

I have seen this thing in a swimming pool before I saw this episode. Thanks for showing me what they really are
reply

The backswimmer is like a demi-gorgon from Stranger Things (always pulling meals into the upsidedown)
