Hi, thanks for the vids, I have only just discovered them and they are excellent. A couple of questions, 1 should be fairly simple. What happens to the power in a half wave rectifier on the unused wave half? The other might be a bit more complicated. I have two windturbines both three phase, one manufactured and the other home made so the later will be uneven flow cos the coils were all wound by hand and will not be perfectly aligned with the magnets but it works. I also have two grid tie 3 phase inverters one 2 kw at 45 to 90 volts and the other 1kw at 22 to 60volt. Can you tell me what would happen if I hooked up both turbines to one inverter? would the rectifier be able to sort out the different voltages and amps and phases, I would hope the lower power generator would cut in first and the store bought would cut in later but voltages would equalise but the phases would be very different, would that matter?

Hello Sir, our local Utility power connection to our house is both Live (L-L) and no N. The voltage is 230V. When a meter is used to check L to G its 115V. I bought a Hybrid-Inverter for my Solar that supposed to be I can connect the Utility supply to automatically charge the batteries in case the Sun is not available. However, the manufacturer advised me not to connect the Inverter because the input required is N - L and 230V (like the diagram) and may damage the equipment. I followed the advise of the manufacturer but its a waste I can't charge my batteries at night or when I needed with the Inverter. Should I take the risk and connect the Utility lines? Thank you.

Great video Paul, thank you! I have a few questions. I'm assuming that in your example with 2 bulbs the neutral amp draw was 5A because the bulbs were in parallel to each other? Is it possible to have a circuit with a GFI where we have multiple loads in parallel to each other (one plug powering a blow dryer, one plug outlet powering a. curling iron) causing a difference in current back on neutral? As I'm thinking about it I'm thinking that while the outlets may be in parallel to each other, they're both in series with the GFI?

I have been trying to learn this concept for years, and for years, NO ONE could teach it to me so easily as you just did in this video.

I've been searching online for an answer and all I see is neutral and ground can be connected. I don't understand why can't the ground wire be connected(directly) to the neutral wire since both wire just goes back to the source. Is it just to prevent a scenario where the neutral wire somehow gets disconnected or damaged and hot wire is still good? and that way we still have ground connection?

I love it. Would it best to show what is the load, kW, given we know amps and voltage? The formula is difference between 240V and 120V. Most people applied the formula incorrectly. That would include 208V and 120V. That would go the same for 480V and 277V to come up the kW load. Most electricians can get Volt and Amps using meter but dont know how to derive kW load

I wish you would do a video showing different transformer hook ups. I haven't been able to figure out what people mean in diagrams where on the primary side of the transformer, one side is hooked up to one of the phases, and the other side goes to ground. If it just goes to ground, how is there a completed circuit, and how does electricity flow?

I still don't understand what is the difference between Hot and Netral with AC. After all, electrons first come through the first conductor, and leave through the second, and then vice versa. It turns out that these two wires should change roles every half of the oscillation, but for some reason this does not happen in the figures.

I guess Ill just put the hot and neutral into a full bridge rectifier and call it a day? (After going through a step down transformer)

I once rewired a basement outlet once so I could move it over an inch. I hit the breaker, unscrewed it, though the ground wire loosly pressed into the cinderblock looked unsafe, put it back together to the wall, went to turn the breaker on and noticed I had flicked the wrong one. Praise baby Jeezus.

The box fan that I sleep with keeps tripping the GFCI switch in the bathroom. Once tripped it does not reset manually and it took almost 48 hours for it to reset itself. The lights work and it sucks not having a fan on but Im too afraid to plug anything in upstairs.

This video would be perfect, except for you keep saying the neutral is the return path and it returns the current to the source even though your illustration shows that it only does this half the time. If it werent for that, this would be the perfect video.

Question. the pictured transformer shows H1 and H2 primary coil connection. Is one of these a neutral back to the substation?
If yes, then must say i never see this (2 bushing) single phase transformer. ONLY SEE single bushing cans on residential service.

Maybe yeah explained it somewhere but in the diagram you hook the negative side to the plus side of the battery and the hot side to the negative side of the battery, I always was was under the impression that the plus terminal was the live side of a battery

Wait, doesn't the circuit breaker protect us from overload and short circuit in only hot and neutral? I thought the residual circuit protection devices did the comparison between hot and neutral. Perhaps it is a terminology difference?

According to this video, current goes back and forth via Hot and Neutral wires. So hot becomes neutral half of the times because it is alternating current. It is even demonstrated in the simulation at 4: 42 - 5: 00 min. Is that correct?

Why is the Neutral wire connected to the plus (+) side of the battery instead of the minus (-) side?
I would think that the Hot (red) wire would be connected to the plus side like you would see under the hood of a car.

Quick question here what determines the voltage of the neutral wire and then how come when the neutral wire brings power back to the grounding bar the power doesnt back feed the ground to all of the grounding system?

I've discovered the hard way several times that an outlet can still be shorted even if it passes through a switch in the off position.
Can explain how this happens? How does the hot wire complete the circuit?

Neutral and ground now makes sense to me in dc. But in ac, they make no sense to me. If the purpose of neutral is to return the signal, in alternating current, isn't the hot returning signal also back and forth?

Please remember that GFCIs are not foolproof and although they are safer they are not SAFE. You can still be electrocuted by a GFCI circuit although it is less likely. So take all usual precautions anyway.

Isn't it supposed to be the opposite?
If you connect it like that, then wouldn't the voltage across the load be negative?

why is it called neutral if when the current changes direction there is electricity flowing through it? does it not becomes the hot wire when this happens? aren't they both hot wires?

Maam, Im still not understand. In DC it is easy to find the Hot wire, but in AC looks like the Neutral can become Hot wire too. Current flows IN = HOT, OUT = NEUTRAL?
