Information about Subtropical highland climate: -
1. All subtropical highlands have large diurnal ranges during the dry season and in some places the high diurnal range stays year-round. But in some places the diurnal range is very small during the wet season. The largest diurnal ranges are found in Peruvian and Bolivian andes.
2. Most subtropical highlands have average rainfall of 700 - 2500 mm a year. The wettest subtropical highlands are found in Colombia, North-east India, Nepal, Bhutan and New Guinea. In these places, rainfall exceeds 3000 mm a year in some spots and can even exceed 10, 000 mm a year.

I was born in the Central American highlands, nearly 1. 5 km up in the sky. Mexico City and Kathmandu--two cities I have visited--have remarkably similar weather to the Central American highlands. Consistently perfect, dry, spring-like weather all year round, with only marked dry and wet seasons. I would include Cuzco, Peru but that city is so high up in the sky that you can tell it's colder. I do keep getting invites to go to Medellin, Colombia, which has the same weather. And later this month I'm visiting San Jose, Costa Rica, which also has roughly the same altitude. Can't wait!

For two weeks, I did volunteering in a small village in the mid-Himalayas of Uttarakhand, India (the nearest town to me was Mussoorie, and I was surprised by how mild the August temperature was! I thought -this is like a nice cool spring/summer day in Britain-. Then I went to Rishikesh for a daytrip. Oh boy. Going into the valley, the humidity and temperature spiked by over 10 degrees! XD I was dying! lol

In my opinion this is the best climate type. Not too hot, not to cold year round.
Think Da Lat in Vietnam and Nuwara Eliya in Sri Lanka, which basically falls between 10c and 25c all year round.
Cities such as Kathmandu fall at the outer edge of Subtropical highland, which makes it too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer.

subtropical highlands always were very unique to me, its subtropic but has very strange climate compared to real subtropics, high altitude is unique here, for example footballers who come to play in peru, bolivia experience oxygen shortage and play worse than they normally play, cause they cant adjust so fast to unique climate

Hello everyone! I hope you enjoy this rare presentation of this unusual climate. Let me know if you've experienced the -eternal spring- either through travel, or if you're lucky enough to live in one of these areas!
Climate sub-types of the cities mentioned here are Cwb, except for Quito and Bogota which are Cfb.

There are few places in Indonesia in which they had this climate, the most well known example is Ruteng, a town in Flores island, which borders between subtropical highland and tropical climate. This climate also happened to exist in some highland areas in Java, Sumatra, Sulawesi and Papua.

-Coniferous forests are also very common in this climate, the same forests that have a large part of the USA, Canada, Europe and East Asia. In addition, it is very cozy since it is a cozy cold and it does not have anything warm or hot.
In Bogota the forests of Coniferas are common. -

The subtropical highland climate has amazing weather, but honestly the Mediterranean especially of Southern California is better. It-s sunnier and on the coast temperatures stay moderate year round! Also Some Am and Cfa regions located in Florida have amazing weather Nov-Apr!

Even in predominantly tropical countries, countries with rugged topography and high-elevation tend to be wealthier than ones with flat terrain. The higher elevations and rugged terrain seems to help drain away excessive rainfall and create pockets of dry land.

I think it would be really cool for you to focus on a country and break down all it's climates and weather patterns. My wife is from Kenya and we look at different places to move to there, it would be super cool to have such an amazing overview of that country.

The highland areas in southeastern Australia, such as Lithgow, Bathurst, Khancoban and Canberra have a subtropical highland climate (with uniform rainfall. So that region should have been highlighted on the map. Oh and as well as the highlands of New Guinea.

I lived in Panama when I was aq kid. Every day was hot and humid. about an hour and a half out of Panama City there is a town called El Valle. While not high enough in altitude to be a Cfb, it was about 20 cooler there year around than in Panama City.

In India and Nepal, the foothills of the Himalayas are heavily forested(which have this climate) and are extremely biodiverse, and are the last refuge for many endangered megafauna like rhinoceros. This region is called the terai/dooars

My best climate so far.
Baguio City in the Philippines is known to have this mild temperature, thus given the name SUMMER CAPITAL OF THE PHILIPPINES. It is situated at 1, 400 meters above sea level.

It-s really interesting how the conditions are so similar to oceanic climates. I-ve lived in both, and it-s weird that you find similar temperatures and rainfall, but everything else is so different.

I used to live in this climate. I was born in this climate. The winters were cold and very dry but the summers were warm and rainy but now I am living in a hot desert.

After a while, someone has taken the responsibility for explaining the world's climate in a beautiful way. Good Job. Can't wait for the future episodes: )
reply

So it seems that in every tropical country with highlands they try to make the capital city there if it has comfortably shallow valleys or plateaud.

Grew up in Bogota, and after traveling all over the world I can say that Bogota has the nicest weather. No need for AC or heating. Really miss that!
reply

Interestingly, many of these climates are similar to warmer Oceanic cities like Auckland and Melbourne, except most of them are under 50m.
reply

Simple question: So why is it called 'subtropical', if it is found in the actual tropics, and not the subtropical regions of the world?
reply

How come no mention of the Cordillera Mountains region in the Philippines and its summer capital Baguio, when talking about Asia?

Isnt the papuan highlands also subtropical highland climate? But in koppen climate map they are shown as tropical climate.

So basically this is just a tropical version of the oceanic climate found in England, France and Northwest North America?
