What is worth desoldering from old electronics? DIY Fume Extractor Robert: Yes, I too am a tinkerer of electronics as well as automotive stuff. I built for my HAMM radio license class a working transceiver about 40 years ago. I sourced the parts out of the kind of throw away stuff available in the midwestern United States in the late 70s. It was not complex but could send/ receive Morse code out to about 30 miles. I am the same with car/ motorcycle parts. made a perfectly working Muncie M-21 4 speed transmission out of 2 broken M21s.
Keep at it brother. Well see who builds the first time machine! ;)

Regarding DIP ICs I bought myself a cheap desoldering station (ZD-915 ESD 80W for 83, 50 (idealo. de) ).
After the first test I just asked myself why I didn't buy one of these years before. It is really easy to unsolder such IC's with that

Next time, attach the filter to the front of the fan, not only is physics on your side re airflow (better to suck through a filter than blow into one, but you'll also clean the air before it hits your fan and gunks it up over time.

DIP packages would be one of the first things I'd salvage if it was an identifiable part. They're the easiest to prototype with on a breadboard and I'm generally going to be building the final product on perfboard.

Can one make something useful out of working SB or Audigy sound cards? If not, is there something worth salvaging apart from the obvious - the mini jack sockets?

I just desoldered a bunch of old Magnavox transistor radio transistors. I found a couple pairs of good ones to use in building a Fuzz Face guitar effect pedal.

The Fluke model 12b is a fantastic meter. My favorite. The reason being that it has z function. It reads capacitors and coils. Good luck finding one.

I'm more or less a retired engineer people laughed at my for salvaging parts who's laughing now look at the prices for jfets hahaha

You see if you have a hot air station you could easily move every component ever you can find without using a soldering iron

This is precisely how you end up with a garage full of electronics crap - I might be able to use that one day. Er, no.
