Electronic Basics #14: Capacitors thiagomundim1: Hey, GreatScott, I know a very interesting trick with eletrolitic capacitors you could use for many projects. maybe you already knows the trick. maybe not. Well, the trick allows you to REVERT the capacitor's POLARITY without destroying it. To do that you simply need to solder two capacitors in series where the soldered pins are the same polarity and voilah (I think the word is voilah) you can revert the polarity without problem and charge normaly the capacitors. As everybody knows, in this configuration we sum the voltages limits of both capacitors and apply the formula for the total capacitance 1/Ceq = 1/C1 + 1/C2 +. + 1/Cn. hope you enjoy the trick and let me know if you tried! Greetings from Brazil! =)

Are the ratings such as voltage and microfarads on the capacitor it's max values? For example a 16volt 2200 microfarad, can it handle a maximum of 16 volts and produce 2200 microfarads? If so then shouldn't a 20 volt 4600 microfarad capacitor be better due to its higher energy store capabilities? I'm new to all this and was just wondering about this.

hey im new plz help
im working on a project and it needs a capacitor to dump High current high voltage into a coil I need to know how many volts and amps it dumps how do I figure this out is there a formula? all i know is that the cap charges to the max supply voltage but when the voltage is released suddenly how many amps are with that voltage?

I made my own capacitor from 2 sheets of aluminimium foil separated by cling wrap. I folded it all up into a cube and taped it. I actually got 500nf out of it. But it leaked all of its charge very quickly. Rimstar has videos on making caps, dry andelectrolytic. I should make one of those some time.

May I ask below DIY capacitor geometry questions?
Bigger the roll (bigger diameter) make higher capacitance.
More surface contact to + and - leg make higher Amp capacitor.
Does longer the cylinder roll make higher DC voltage?

Great explainatio n.
After I removed capacitor from circuit board. How do I know which leg is positive, which is negative?
Your video demonstrate connect legs in wrong direction will cause capacitor to explore.

Great stuff. One small correction on 2: 09: The more capacitance and greater maximum voltage rating a capacitor gets, the more energy (not power, which is energy divided by time) it can deliver.

Can you make a car start only with a bunch of capacitors? if it can be done, then can you replace the battery with this capacitor setup and use regularly? pls explain.

Can someone please explain, how to calculate required capacitance for a particular circuit or capacitance for a led/motor? how to calculate the value required?

I think if you went slower this video would be much much much better.
It's really hard for newbies to get things at this speed.
Please proceed slower.
