Idiot tries Building a Drone and eventually Succeeds (Lots of Fails)

I will show you how I built my own drone. This way you should get a basic understanding of what is important when designing your own and most importantly it should clear up the confusion about drone building. I personally think the drone market is flooded with tons of different hardware and software and there is not really a good guide that gives you a basic overview about everything. And that is what I am trying to do with this video

Oh, please, people, don't make this your first drone. Buy a ready-to-fly whoop kit (even Betafpv Cetus) to learn how to fly and not harm anybody (including yourself, these 5 props are really! dangerous.
Also, spend some quality time in the simulator, such as Velocidrone.
Then once you ready, buy some bind-and-fly drone from carbon so you won't destroy it completely after the very first crash. But also, carbon is way better in terms of vibrations. The drone will fly 10000% better.
You can also order a carbon frame from many manufacturers, or for example, from Criss Rosser (AOS frame, and buy all the components separately.

Please don't do stuff like testing it in your hand. 5 props can easily slice your fingers open!
Your component choice was alright, but 3d printing the frame isn't a great idea. Betaflight isn't made to handle oscillations caused by soft arms like this. The PID adjustments required to make it fly smooth would make the controls pretty sluggish. Carbon frames are pretty cheap these days and using 3d prints would be more expensive in the end with them breaking all the time: )

Great video. Two suggestions from my experience
1. Try practicing in a simulator. There are a a few out there and it gives you lots of opertunities to practice without risk of breaking anything
2. Get a carbon fiber frame. The strength difference is massive. I have crashed drones into metal objects going 60mph without anything breaking

Disappointed - I thought it would be more DIY/hacky but aside from the 3D printed frame (which is probably the root of most of the problems with this build) there wasn't really any of that, just standard FPV drone parts. However, props to you directing people to Joshua Bardwell who is indeed, the FPV Knowitall; -)

I would say buy a 5 inch carbon fiber frame, they can withstand a lot of crashes. Watch fpv drone freestyle videos and practice in a simulator, so you can crash many times and get better. Joshua bardwell has videos for good simulator and a lot of beginner friendly drone build videos, highly recommended.

Hey Scott, you may be interested in my DIY teensy-based flight controller. Not quite as polished as betaflight, but still very good stabilization performance--and it's arduino-based, so it's super easy to customize and modify (custom sensors, automation, etc. Made for hackers like you!

Great video. I'm working on a drone myself. I'm using brushed motors to keep complexity down but I'm designing the controller board myself so I'm able to add sensors similar to the bigger drones. Do you ever mess around with obstacle avoidance?

I am from US, and I have a ham radio license, and reading thru the rules it sounds like a lot of guys make ham frequency controlled radios, that I see as beneficial because then you aren't stuck with part 15 rules and the 2. 4GHz frequency

PID was my 1st mistake 30 sec flight and broke my drone fpv racing drones are nothing like dji ones u take off u are the drone life line u don't have a computer to keep u in the air u have to do that

I'm glad that you got into it but a wee bit suggestion, let this video be for someone who already knows about FPV. Because for a beginner, it's pretty risky. Rather beginners are suggested to use RTF or BNF

Working on a drone with a small Nitro motor and generator. This drone you built should be able to lift it. So it charges the battery in flight. Going to be a great project if I had the time.

good job but why put the esc over fc? Esc go under. Also a 3d printed frame will cause lot of vibration to the gyro so it's very hard to tune your pids and filters

Really nice guide and build!
But not cutting the zipties at the bottom triggered the hell out of me, especially while using a flush wirecutter Nice video!

This is awesome! Good for you Great Scott! Not only did you finally make your drone but this video was amazing in showing how you did it. Thanks as always!
