greatscottlab Basically a nice video, but the info about mobile technologies and their frequency is wrong. Please correct this!
Should be more like this:
1G: dead.
2G: GSM. 850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz depending on country
3G: UMTS. Mostly around 2 GHz. Also dead in many countries.
4G: LTE. Different frequencies, depending on country. Mostly around 700, 1500, 2500, 3500 MHz and others in that range. 3800 MHz is the maximum in use, but not common I think.
5G: 5G (sometimes NR): The 40 GHz can be used by industry within an idustrial hall, same as some other freqencies, but that's not really relevant. Mostly uses 600, 700, 800, 900, 1500, 2100, 2300 and 2600 MHz. For example in Germany, 3G was turned down to use its frequencies for 5G.

Looking at the frequency output that the jammer spat out makes me a little bit concerned. 125 MHz is close to the Air Band emergency frequency of 121. 5 MHz, and given that you can have some MHz variance with hand wound coils, adjustment etc, some poor sod building it might inadvertently jam that frequency.
Now, given the power level of the jammer, not that big a risk of causing harm, but you may still get to provoke the curiosity of PTT (Postal, Telegraph and Telephone) authorities in your country, and all the interesting times (in the ancient Chinese curse sense) it brings with it.
Whenever you build something which transmits RF, be attentive that they do not spit out stuff on important frequencies (such as emergency (beacon) frequencies, either directly or because of poor overtone filtering. PTT's generally are very cranky when you mess with such frequencies, and are not too happy about any other frequencies being jammed either.

But what one can do is not spread schematics or link to them if one has not tested them or does not know whether it is a working design or not. In a forum about electronics I visit on a regular basis we started including comments IN the image of a schematic stating whether a design is TESTED/WORKING or UNTESTED, so that if the schematic is picked up by some search engine (typically the text normally accompanying the schematic is lost, the status of the schematic is clear to the person finding it. This will hopefully help a beginner who can not see for himself whether a circuit makes sense or not to decide whether he wants to spend time and money on it or not.

Even if it could have worked, at those frequencies you need to fine tune hand wound inductors by adjusting the spacing between loops. You have to take the direction of the inductors in to account, the proximity of components, trace lengths etc. That's not something anyone can do without proper knowledge of RF electronics. The booster is even worse. NO filtering for either receive or transmit antenna is the first HUGE problem. Same issues as I mentioned before in regards to tuning and PCB design. And even if the electronics would work, the device would receive its own transmitted signal, amplify it again, and re-transmit. It would literally feedback so hard it would just burn out just about every component used in a fraction of a second.

Loved the video and the jammers are obvious junk. But your method of showing that they don't do anything isn't really valid either. Looking for changes in recieved signal strength on the phone won't really show that the jammer doesn't work because 4G and 5G (and CDMA 3G) are iterference limited systems. Injecting noise is the best way to jam them, lowering the Carrier to Interference ratio (C/I) to the point that no data can be exchanged. With successful jamming the signal strength on the device does not go down. In fact it might even go up if the interfering signal is strong enough.

Wouldn't you want them to be fake, though I mean, you wouldn't want everyone just knowing how to make a signal jammer. I think in this case you should just leave them as they are. Only expose projects, that you can show people to make for real. If you wouldn't teach people how to make a certain project, then people will be left going to other places, which might give them fake information. So unless you can give them the right information, you shouldn't bother.

I'm pretty sure that this circuit wouldn't jam anything, but you made two mistakes:
1. In high frequency circuits not only elements matter but physical design also, you won't get any high frequency circuit working without proper ground plane (dual sided pcb, dead bug or manhattan circuit are necessary.
2. NE555 generate square wave, so rise and fall times of signal are important here to know highest harmonic frequency it would generate.

Fake information online does indeed get much more traction than legitimate information. That's because 99% of those watching have very little knowledge in electronics, will never attempt to repeat the circuits, and think this is legitimate. It's one of those things where it's easier to lie to people then convince them they've been lied to. It's a pandemic, and it's affecting all sides of life, not just DIY electronics.

I remember when I started with electronics, I was always skeptical of whether circuits I found online worked. But I had no way of telling since I lacked the experience. Many times did I wire something up only to find it didn't work, which was very demotivating. Please do more of these, it might help newcomers from being demotivated and quitting hobby electronics altogether, which would be a shame!

Maybe you should show how to actually make them.
For a very long time, I want to have a tiny jammer, just powerful enough to make it impossible to MY phone to receive and send calls. I want to result offline without using the flight mode. That should be sort of 1 mW of power, if not less. Similarly, I would like a working 4G amplifier, because I am living in a zone with just too little signal.

Yes, continue to expose them. They are click bait to make money. Of their millions of views, I'll bet virtually zero people actually tried to build the thing, because while the circuit is very simple looking for an experienced hobbyist, it is over way over the head of people who have never studied electronics. If they actually tried to build it and it didn't work, they'd just blame themselves.

Those circuits might work on the very long wavelength shortwave radio bands. Might. With some work. And the performance of jamming an AM radio station might leave a lot to be desired, if noticeable at all. To walk into the GHz range requires the consideration of every millimeter of design to be calculated.

Supposedly when you use the square wave directly you should get wide spectrum jamming (on the expense of power.
Also the signal meter only measures the strength of the wave at given frequency and not the quality. I found out when standing inside a metal door frame I get full signal but very low speeds.

If exposing more gets you more views then go for it. Sadly just like restoration videos most of the fake videos get more views and its the casual viewer that give more clicks. Watching someone scrub rust and dirt from a water damaged circuit board with no broken traces really gets under my skin. LOL

It is to easy to ignore bogus stuff it is always better to expose and make people aware of the scammers. In this case it amounts to no more than a few bucks and time wasted but what if it were a more serious matter like a heart monitor or such like. Just better to expose.

Not only those fake jammers don’t have the frequency, but since they are on the vhf range it should be nice to test if its signals is strong enough to interfere with ham radios tuned to that frequency, but you may need a licensed ham operator to TX for you.

I think they would make for fun occasional videos to both educate on bad/fake products. And if the product would actually be usefull and legal, perhaps the second half would be the basics of how to actually do what they were lying about. :D
