Herman the German & The Battle of Teutoburg Forest jen: I wonder when it was that Armenius made the decision to rebel against Rome? Was it his goal all the way back from being taken as a child as his form of revenge? You would think that as he had lived in Rome since young childhood & had grown up being taught their way of life w the intention of Romanizing him like they did w other children taken hostage for good behavior of their fathers, especially after rising through the Roman military to eventually given a high position- he knew exactly what the Romans could/would do to rebellious peoples & the low success possibilities of winning against Rome, so why would he risk so much? Was he content living as a Roman by the time he was sent back home, then had some sort of incident that was the catalyst causing this attack against Rome? I find it very hard to believe he had been planning since childhood that he would fake being a good Roman for upwards of 20 years, learning how the Romans wage war, to become a trusted auxiliary officer so that he could be posted back home where he could then go amongst people he didn't know or have any relationships with, convince these strangers to overthrow their Roman oppressors & attack those Roman legions violently thus dispelling the invaders from Germanica- all based on their shared German heritage? There was no way he could have known from childhood that any of that might happen, leading him to be in the position to enact some severe form of revenge like he did- so it most likely was resulting from some incident in his adulthood that kickstarted the plot. I just find it difficult to see him plotting his long game revenge plan as a 10 year old, dedicating his every moment of life to taking a violent revenge against his captors- never knowing what his life had in store for him among the Romans, they could have trained him up to be a politician or something like that instead(then sent back in an administrative position) & he would've had no way to rally strange German tribesmen to his crazy cause. Bears considering, right? Love his attack plans & the fantastic use of the terrain against the legionary columns though! The plan was terrific & executed so well, it did give a desired effect too- Rome finally did stop trying to expand into Germania!

I was reading the Heidelberger Books, in the Time of Herman you had a lot of diffrent tribes like the nemeter etc, he made all tribes one, cause they shared the german (deutsche) language that the tribes can speak to each other they used german (deutsch) but the languages where similar like slangs today of the diffrent tribes. Herman brings all the diffrent tribes together and in the old books they had alls witten what they want. freedom, peace, searching their higher minds, also science etc. Oh and road buildung of stones was the idea of the germans not the romans, tacitus wrote about it.

I don't think the romans were outnumbered because three legions means close to 30. 000 romans. So the Germans would need 40. 000 to 50. 000 men according to historians but one tribe could maybe only muster 5. 000 or less because of small population density and the fact that 50% of a tribe were women, children and the elderly.
I think in the initall engagements the germans had fewer men than the romans and only later when they were reinforced by other tribes and with huge roman casualties they outnumbered the romans.

While there is no historical evidence of arminius's real germanic name, i love that we call him Herman, which literally means Mister man. Though there is a theory that he is the origin of the (german) siegfried (victors peace)/ (nordic) sigurd saga, so maybe that was the name he was known by to his contemporary germanics, which might also make sense, since his father was called Sigimer, so there is some similarity in the names.

Interesting. I had always wondered if the local German leaders soured on the young man who did not grow up in Germany. I had always suspected that Herman was just making a power grab because it was easy to betray the Roman's trust and to play to native sentiments. It seems however, that the Romans orchestrated Herman's death and the breakup of tribal alliances. That puts my theories into question a bit.

Arminius' original name is actually not known to us. Hermann is the germanification of his latin name, from the nationalistic period of the 19th century. It might however been close to the name of his father, Sigimer.
reply

Apparently Arminius's Germanic name might have been, Erminaz which means, man of war in proto Germanic. The Germanic languages spoken in those days would be very different to modern German today.

Hermann is not an accurate name for Arminius. We don't know his actual German name. Calling Arminius Hermann is a much later invention from the late middle ages/rennaissance period.

Damn, he saved them, they killed him? Maybe because he wanted to be King of the free people and they disagreed. Or maybe simply out of money. Greed.
reply

THE MOST famous? maybe.
8 minutes to talk about it? sad.
AND WHY NOT GERMANS talking of Germanic history - WHY A kiwi? god. so ANNOYING.

reply

Well, I might as well watch the obligatory Arminius/Teutoburg Forest video. I guess it won't be too long for the Battle of Alesia comes out.
reply

I always thought he was killed by his libertarian brethren because he intended to make himself king of germanica, and they killed him for it?

would love to see one about the Romans fighting the different tribes in Northern Spain, Basques, Aquitani, Celts, Iberian.

the WORST Roman defeat was when the destroyed Isrealites ran to hide in Judea and the Palestinians were already there
