Edmund Ironside: The Last Warrior King of Wessex Dupee's: I despise that in the American schooling system from 1st grade all the way until college we learned such a tiny bit of history, I may be biased because history was always my favorite. For our entire School career with the exception of Greece and Rome we basically rush and gloss over all of world history right up until the discovery of the Americas ( and even then we learn complete inaccuracies about the discovery. And yes i get if you're taking us history, but we learn world history, but there was so much unbelievable and amazing history before the us. Even in us history I feel we have to go all the way back to antiquity because we can draw direct lines from the thousands of years before America and see how they directly affected the us today. It's just a shame, I'm us history we get pre revolution then a ton of American revolution and war of 1812 ( which is a joke) and so on. Meanwhile is the 15 years of social studies classes we were never once told about the 30 years war or even the humdred years war. I could've asked anyone in my highschool if they knew what the 30, 80 and 100 years wars were and I guarantee 99 percent would have no idea which is baffling. Arguably and in my opinion I truly believe the 30 and 100 years wars had more impact on the development of America even more so than the American revolution and especially the war of 1812. It's sad mad. even just English history have thousands of years of intriguing and amazing history. I don't know I just think it's a failure of our systems. If there were any way to do it I truly think that the us and United kingdom should learn domestic history and then in 11th and 12 the grade have teachers from the UK teach. American students world or at least European history and vice versa with American teachers in europe

Forkbeards final army was probably more than just Danish-Norwegian. There have through Sweins wife, a swedish queen also been swedes. There very probably also has been slavic troops from Proto-Poland and/or from the northern coasts of Pommerania. Probably he also had welsh troops.
Knud and swein both died young, and there has been speculation in Denmark if they had a seldom genetic disease which made them die so young.
If Swein and after him Knud had reached a higher age, the world maybe would look different now,
Had Knud reached an age of 75 he first would have died in 1070.
A long life for Knud had made Norman invasion impossible and stopped much Viking activity.
For the anglo-saxon farmers this probably had been the best option, if one considers what happend after norman conquest.

It is interesting to note how harmonious Svens and Knuts rules were. As compared to the french invasion of William the bastard that absolutely and totally gutted anglo saxon culture. They even erradicated the anglosaxon names from the world. And destroyed the language and legal system and everything else. Class struggle is so fierce in Britain because it is an ethnic struggle, between the english and their french overlords.

Ive recently read what I would call the saga of the lives of Aethelred the Unready, Svein Forkbeard, Cnut the Great, Edmund Ironsides, and the kids of all those mentioned. And I dont know why anyone hadnt told me before, but its one of the most heartbreaking, absolute best stories in history. What happened to the family of Alfred the Great is a tragedy, but one hell of a story.

Tribal savagery was the order of the day. Imagine what it must have been like to live through all that, no safe spaces for little snowflakes! Will we see its like again? London now the murder capitol par excellence! Is it time to for a Sweyn Forkbeard moment again? Time will tell. Who will save us from the Barbarians?

It's worth noting that our present queen descends from Edmund Ironside. His granddaughter St Margaret became Queen of Scotland; and her daughter Edith married Henry I, youngest son of William the Conqueror. Their daughter Matilda was the mother of Henry II.

My 29th great-grandfather (and loads of other folks' as well. If you are interested in this period of English history, I highly recommend Justin Hill's historical novel Shieldwall, which tells the story from the perspective of Godwin Wulfnothson.

Another great video but I felt that you could have indicated the battle sites on the map as you were talking about them as the names do not have a meaning with placing them. Have you considered doing, Stirling, Bannockburn and Culloden?

Had Edmund Ironsides lived, how different England, Britain, & the English language would have been. Edmund's son Edward, & grandson, Edgar Aethling could possibly have succeeded peacefully to the throne thus no Norman conquest.

I read a book that suggested that AEthelred should be called the Unread, because it is just a better translation. It wouldn't confuse people into believing he wasn't ready. I know the popular way to write it is Unready

And just so you're aware the word pagan was used as a derogatory term by the Christians the religion was not known as pagan! It was known as Norse or modern day Asatru which means true to the old gods

Over a hundred years later they killed the invaders, something to look forward too, and it will happen, just a matter of when. So invaders go while you can. History always repeats.

Interesting precursor to the invasion of England by William the conqueror. England seems to have gone through a lot of turmoil before evolving into the mighty British Empire.

Hi History Time, could you provide me with a source for Edmund's possession of Offa's longsword? Not the same hunnic sword Charlemagne gifted to Offa?
reply

Its Spelt Sweyn but its definitely not pronounced how you pronounced it! The wey is pronounced as a V! So it would be pronounced Sven Forkbeard

Even though Cnut fought edmund, he still had respect for the man and visited his grave, cnut was a great leader even if he wasn't english.

Aren't the pictures of him fighting on horseback unlikely? Generaly Anglisc armies fought on foot during this period, shirley?
